Brisbane Transport has indicated that the tickets are failing at a rate of approximately 900 to 1,100 per week due to a combination of both the age of the equipment and the magnetic strip on the Ten Trip Saver ticket stock. This high incidence of faulty tickets is impacting on the running time of Brisbane Transport buses and decreasing the level of customer satisfaction.

Tim Nicholls MP
Shadow Minister for Transport, Traffic Management, Trade, Employment and
Industrial Relations Member for Clayfield
1 August 2008

Bell tolls for ten trip tickets and agents

Despite months of protest and numerous petitions, Sunday will mark the
beginning of the end for the popular ten trip saver tickets.

From the 4th of August the discount ticket will no longer be sold. It is
a decision that will cost ticket resellers thousands of dollars in
business.

To add insult to injury, many of those newsagents have been denied the
opportunity to sell the new Go Cards.

Shadow Minister for Transport Tim Nicholls said the State Labor
Government's decision to scrap the popular ten trip tickets and cut many
agents out of ticket sales would see the number of TransLink ticket
outlets slashed from 300 to just 165.

"From Monday, not only will commuters be left with fewer ticketing
options, but the availability will be cut by half," he said.

"While a similar discount is offered on the Go Card, many commuters are
still dubious of the system which has gained a reputation for being
troublesome."

Mr Nicholls said he could not understand why the State Government had
limited the number of Go Card licences awarded to newsagents.

"Suburban newsagents are a popular point of sale for commuters," he
said.

"The number of tickets sold in newsagents is proof that commuters like
the flexibility and convenience of being able to purchase tickets at
newsagents rather than waste time waiting in line at bus and train
stations.

"To cut these newsagents out of the sale of Go Cards makes no sense."

End of the road for 10-trip saver

QuoteEnd of the road for 10-trip saver
Tony Moore | August 1, 2008 - 11:09AM

Bus, train and ferry commuters taking up the new transport go-card should be allowed a three-month amnesty from fines when 10-trip saver paper tickets are phased out this weekend, Shadow Transport Minister Tim Nicholls says.

People will no longer be able to buy 10-trip saver tickets from Sunday, but can use their tickets until they run out.

Mr Nicholls said the government and Translink should have realised the decision to scrap the paper 10-trip saver ticket would force more commuters across to the go card.

"Now that we have 10-trip saver tickets winding up, effectively on Sunday night for all intensive purposes, we are going to have many thousands of people move across to the go card," Mr Nicholls said.

"Many thousands of these people are now going to need time to get used to using it."

"There was an amnesty when the the go card was first introduced in March.

"We found that in that period there was quite a few situations were people were simply getting used to the system.

"Particularly the 'tag on' and 'tag off' operation - mostly the 'tag-off' situation," he said.

brisbanetimes.com.au this week revealed public transport users have either forgotten or failed to properly swipe their go cards at the end of their journeys 221,488 times since the card launched.

Mr Nicholls said a three-month amnesty period was an adequate time to allow the new card users to adapt.

The amnesty period was suggested by rail lobby group Rail: Back on Track this morning.

Spokesman Robert Dow said it was a simple thing for the government to introduce and would be a valuable "good faith" exercise for Translink.

"It would be a simple thing to give all new users a three-month amnesty period for refunds of fines while they come to terms with using the go card," Mr Dow said.

"This would help neutralise the very bad public image that the go card now has, and would encourage further go card uptake.

"The go card does have a learning curve and by offering an amnesty period it would be a sign of good faith all round."

Comment was being sought from Transport Minister John Mickel's office and Translink.

10-trip paper tickets to be axed in favour of Go Card

THE death knell for public transport paper ticketing is looming as the popular 10-trip saver is banished forever after this weekend.
Commuters are being left in the dark over details of the phase-out of traditional paper forms as more bus, train and ferry passengers move across to the Go Card.

Newsagents are furious over the removal of the 10-trip saver products from Monday, with some operators estimating annual revenue losses in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Ten-trip savers are popular for their flexibility, with no expiry date compared to the discounts on Go Card fares for the remainder of each week after taking six journeys.

Translink yesterday defended the move, claiming 10-trip savers were suffering processing failures about 800 times a week.

"The timetable for the withdrawal of any further integrated paper ticket products will be contingent on the take-up rate of Go Card and feedback from public transport customers," the spokesman said.

But problems are still plaguing the Go Card with machines at Fairfield station the latest casualty yesterday, slugging commuters with penalties for failing to "touch off" properly.

Opposition transport spokesman Tim Nicholls said the scrapping of the 10-trip tickets would result in TransLink ticket outlets being cut from 300 to 165.

"Not only will commuters be left with fewer ticketing options, but the availability will be cut by half," Mr Nicholls said.

Demanding the State Government allow more points of sale, Australian Newsagents Federation state director Bradley Dean said an average operator was about to lose commissions of about $15,000 a year.

"They are hurting about this and are disappointed because they can't understand the logic behind restricting access for commuters," Mr Dean said.

The contract with Cubic Transportation Systems stated paper tickets would be gone once the smartcard arrived, but alterations allowed it to continue beyond the roll-out.

Notice from Sunday Mail December 14th.

It is only proper to point out that if you use your Go card on a connecting rail service with the Airtrain you will NOT receive a 20% discount, you will in fact pay a premium for the non-airtrain rail leg (see here for details).

It seems that normal consumer laws are not applicable to certain organisations ...

10-trip saver deadline looms to make way for Go Cards

10-trip saver deadline looms to make way for Go Cards

COMMUTERS are being urged to use the popular 10-trip saver tickets before they become obsolete on Wednesday, to convert people to Go Cards.
The State Government's Go Card scheme offers similar frequent-user schemes.

The 10-trip savers were withdrawn from sale in August but commuters have been able to still use them.

TransLink is urging people with the tickets to use them before the ticket validators on Brisbane Transport bus and city council ferry services are removed.

There were plenty of discounts still available on the Go Card, a spokeswoman said.

"The Go Card offers upfront discounts of 20 to 35 per cent on daily paper tickets," she added.

"If you use your card more than 10 times in a week from Monday to Sunday, you get a further 50 per cent off."
