Statement

Removal Of Furlong Road Level Crossing Begins Ahead Of Major Summer Works

Minister for Public Transport

Construction is underway at the dangerous and congested Furlong Road level crossing, one of 50 that will be removed by the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan and Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan visited Furlong Road today to mark the start of works and outline a massive program of works that will be carried out across Victoria's train, tram and road network this summer.

Work will ramp up at eight level crossings this summer, affecting train services on the Frankston, Sunbury, Glen Waverley, Belgrave, Lilydale and Bendigo lines at various times in January, as well as nearby roads.

Maintenance works will also affect services on the Glen Waverley, Belgrave and Lilydale lines, and coaches will replace trains on the Albury line in late December for track upgrade works.

The removal of the Burke Road level crossing and construction of a new tram stop will affect tram services on Route 72 between Glenferrie Road and Camberwell Junction, and construction of a new platform stop on the corner of Clarendon Street and Normanby Road will affect sections of routes 12, 96, 109 at different times.

A major upgrade to the Moonee Ponds Junction will require buses to replace trams for parts of routes 59 and 82 for 12 days between Saturday, 16 January and Wednesday, 27 January 2016. Roads around the junction will also be closed overnight during the works to enable them to be carried out safely and efficiently.

Lanes on the West Gate Bridge will be closed from Boxing Day to 8 January to enable critical maintenance works to be carried out. Drivers will still be able to use the West Gate Bridge in both directions, but delays are expected.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan

"After years of excuses and delay, we're getting rid of dangerous, congested crossings at Furlong Road and across Melbourne, to make local communities safer, reduce road congestion and create space to run more trains."

"Works to build a better train, tram and road network will ramp up over summer. It will cause disruption, but it's worth it for the benefits it will bring, making it easier to get to work, school and home again safer and sooner."

Quotes attributable to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan

"We're taking advantage of a quieter time on our road and rail network to get on with removing dangerous and congested level crossings, and undertake critical maintenance and upgrade works across Melbourne."

Quotes attributable to Member for St Albans Natalie Suleyman

"We promised to remove this dangerous and congested level crossing in the heart of our community and I'm proud to be part of the Andrews Labor Government that will finally get rid of it."
