James

James travelled by tram today at 12:30pm and 2:45pm, and there appeared to be no issues with OTR at all. If this was QR, the entire network would still be shot right through until the end of the PM peak.

One thing I did notice - for service notifications on platforms, G: uses the same tone that Sydney Trains (CityRail) uses. I had a little chuckle.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Temporary shutdowns between Helensvale and GCUH after 7pm on 28-30 January for the completion of the Parkwood pedestrian bridge to  the park and ride.

The replacement stop at Helensvale is located on the eastern side just opposite the tram platform, which is advantageous because it  minimises the distance people need to travel on foot compared with if the trams were still running.  Likewise, the Parkwood stop is located in the park and ride itself.

More to come

check comments and you will see that the buses took 2.5 hours to arrive  :fp: :fp:
Someone actually said they usually just walk if an incident like this happens.
I can now see why! I thought an hour wait for a railbus @ Beenleigh was bad...this takes the cake...

ozbob

Just completed an interview with 10 Ten News on this incident.

People need to manage their expectations better.  It's not like they have a fleet of 20 buses (with drivers) on permanent standby to be dispatched at a moment's notice, particularly at 5am.

2.5 hours is not acceptable....PERIOD

When  do you expect the busses and drivers just to be there at the drop of a hat to come from at any time of the day let alone 0500 the office staff would not even be there yet so call the oncall contact who in all likelihood be at home then having to dig up the available staff who are not rostered on peak jobs or school runs get the depot to get the busses not already sorted for other jobs ready yep magic ball stuff is awesome to have never going to happen

SurfRail

If GoldlinQ wanted to pay for a fleet of their own buses and park them up in the depot, nothing is stopping them.  Can't see that being economically viable though.  Likewise having "first go" on anything sitting at Surfside Ernest.

There is alternative public transport at all hours of the day between Southport and Broadbeach anyway.  What they could have encouraged people to do is use the 704/705, 741/747, 731 etc, any of which would have got people going much more quickly than waiting for a dedicated replacement.

It all takes time and even if they did have a fleet of busses and drivers watch what would happen to the cost of tickets would sky rocket other options are available down there and it will always take time to respond to a major incident like this

techblitz

why couldn't TL/SS just cancel a southbound 700 and send it straight to the affected stations? its at half hourly frequency pre 4am anyways
Whats one extra service at 30min frequency?
Anything is better than spinning BS to the affected pax that their railbus is coming.....leaving them in the dark on the arrival time.....ultimately stranding them for 2.5 hours.
Thankfully this cockup has been highlighted on social media.

That's a fair observation but most transit networks in the world have provisions for times when rail networks unexpectedly are put out of service. Pretty often a bus will be pulled off another high-frequency service and rerouted to a railbus route.

I'm not familiar with the GC bus network but I assume like Brisbane there are BUZ services with frequencies of 10-15 minutes. Commuters waiting on the affected line will understand if their service is late or will have to wait another 10 minutes for the next bus because of unforeseen circumstances - they just need to be told why.

SurfRail

It really isn't as simple as some of you are assuming.

James

The issue would be just as bad if it happened in Brisbane, it just so happens that the rail network is almost entirely duplicated by alternative bus routes. Have someone lie down on the tracks at Park Road station, get run over and THEN see where the network is... TransLink and G: cannot account for all stupidity. If things really are that bad, there is the 704/705 there for the shut section.

I hope this man, despite his injuries, has the book thrown at him. What the f**** are people thinking when they do this? Would you lie down in the middle of the Gold Coast Highway for a nap? Intoxicated or not, stupidity like this on our network is entirely avoidable and costs the economy millions.

QuoteThe issue would be just as bad if it happened in Brisbane
Nope this is on another level....2hour+ level
The standard railbus norm for an 'out of the blue' incident on the Brisbane rail network is around 1 hour......due to number of depots, casual drivers on call, depot access and how far operators are willing to send their buses (eg: thompsons Strathpine doing Beenleigh or Cleveland line runs.)
I'm willing to be proven wrong on that...should there be a future early morning incident....but I'm pretty confident in Brisbane they would comfortably scramble drivers within the hour timeframe...

Glink has just shown how exposed it is to an early morning shutdown....2+ hours needs to be vastly improved on.
Just because they don't have the same access to on-call drivers as Brisbane does....doesn't mean a blind eye should be turned to what just happened.
We are constantly hearing pro-light rail patronage propaganda like this
QuoteThe overall increase in patronage across Gold Coast Light Rail since stage 2 opened, when compared with the same period last year, was 27 per cent or an extra 245,259 trips."
how about coughing up the funds for a proper early morning/late evenings replacement strategy.

Such a white elephant!  :hg

^^That's what the ex WA Premier said, so he would get out of investing and building a light rail system in Perth.

I don't think Glink has ever been a white elephant. Tales were only rumoured by vote grabbing pollies and affected businesses during construction at the time.  Some local residents also voiced opposition due to noise during construction and road changes after LoL!
