No sensors, up to the driver to open the correct side.
All opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those held by my employer.

Are there sensors on the train that automatically prevent the doors on the wrong side from being open (i.e a proximity sensor to make sure the platform is within a certain distance of the door), or is it entirely on the driver to not make a mistake?

Doubtful, think of central platform 1, roma st platform4 , narangba.

BrizCommuter

Pretty much everywhere in the UK seems to have correct side door enable now (CSDE). Oh well, this is Queensland!

Couriermail --> $500 million makeover proposed for Fortitude Valley train station precinct

QuoteFORTITUDE Valley's aged train station is at the centre of a $500 million makeover to be under construction within a year.

The site, used by more than 15,000 commuters a day, will include a commercial tower, 207-unit apartment building, retail space, and possibly a cinema or bowling alley.

LaSalle Investment Management lodged a development application with the Brisbane City Council yesterday and said it was negotiating with Queensland Rail to overhaul the retail precinct around the train station. ...

^^Maybe the one-way escalators will be addressed to include extra escalators down and up from the platforms?

brissypete

Looks like hopefully the Wickham St entry will finally get fixed up, last time I was down there both escalators were dead, 1 had been for sometime and was no lighting in the section of walkway through the old Waltons? Building.

Be more use if they raised the platforms to carriage floor level, even the present humps are below carriage floor level. with the looming introduction of the NGR sets which have been designed for DOO and the seeming proposed location for Guards in these sets to be located in the rear cab it would make sense for all platforms  on all stations to be progressively raised to carriage floor level for both disability access and to improve access for all passengers.

Yes was going to mention that too! Good opportunity to tweak and fix things there. Plus future proof.

Apparently.....word is, Milton is going to get a little touch-up 2nd half of 2017.......that's the theory!

Morayfield seems like one of those easy as p%ss upgrades that could be done with minimal fuss.

Be even better if the Dinmore platforms were being raised for their full length ;)

Same with graceville.   Can only hope they are doing newmarket properly.

Newmarket and Alderly will be humps, as has been stated several times previously.

Brisbanetimes --> Fortitude Valley railway station hub set for $500m upgrade
It needs about the double the number of ticket gates than it currently has! There can be massive queues to get out in the am (back to the top of the escalator).

IIRC NIMBYs sunk the previous proposals - apartments / shopping centre.

Ironic though - people who use hospitals tend to have extra accessibility requirements.

How is that going to work with Taringa station not being DDA compliant?

(And I hope if they eventually make it DDA compliant, they don't do a half-bake job and raise only the centre of the platform, leaving the rest of the platform low).

People will probably just end up driving.

FWIW, there'd need to be additional works around Taringa station to ensure there's disabled access to and from the station. Some of the streets leading down to the station from Moggill Rd are quite steep.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

tazzer9

I wouldn't even bother with taringa.  Mainly because once you outside the station,  no one with mobility impairment is getting anywhere without a car.

ozbob

They have to bother.  There is a legislative requirement and deadline.

Queensland Rail should run with our TOD program and BCC as well.

Use the money from property development to cross subsidise platform upgrades.

So bad!! Why is everything 10x harder in Queensland?

They just botch everything!

Those pesky passengers just get in the way of operating a good rail service.  Perhaps time for QR to 'think like a customer'?  :conf

^ Thanks.
Sadly, another report yesterday of an elderly man getting confused and distressed when the doors opened onto a closed section of the platform at Alderley. No announcements or door locking occurred.

What happened to "zero harm"?

Now that it has been established that QR knows that there is a problem, if someone falls through the gap or injures themselves, it will be a lawyers picnic, and the costs of that will fall on govt.

Time we grow up.  The way to do it is to close the station.  Run buses to and from the next stations.

Melbourne does this (they have grown up).  Rather than months of confusion and risk.  The station upgrades can be done  much quicker, no pax issues.  It is clearly more cost effective.

A good idea. They allowed station skip for Graceville for a few days due to construction?
