Perth train station?s retail precinct will be transformed into a modern and vibrant concourse under a multimillion plan by the City of Perth to revitalise the area.

The Citiplace project started in March and will result in an extra 260sqm of retail space created at the upper level of the station?s concourse to cater for new shops and extend existing businesses.

It is part of a plan to revitalise the area and nearby Forrest Place to boost the appeal of the city?s retail heart.

According to the council?s plan for the station concourse, the Citiplace Community Centre will be expanded and a new dental clinic built.

The pharmacy and bakery at the southern end of the precinct will also grow by about 165sqm to enable the businesses to cater for more commuters and shoppers.

The council has also made allowances for 75sqm of new shop space, though tenancies are yet to be confirmed.

City of Perth chief executive Frank Edwards said yesterday the total project would cost $5.3 million and was expected to be completed next May.

The expansion, which is detailed in an artist?s impression, will include an extra level to the community centre.

A new reception area, lift lobby and dental tenancy will be located on the concourse level, with the second level housing two new meeting rooms, a podiatrist, hairdresser, training room and toilets.

The Citiplace Child Care Centre will also be extended.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the railway concourse upgrade was needed, with businesses in the area very busy but lacking space to expand.

?When you see some of the individual operators in that particular concourse area, for example Trackside Bakery and the dentist, they?re very busy businesses and obviously they needed to be able to grow,? she said.

Perth City Council approved $3.4 million in its 2008-09 budget to complete the project.

A further $15 million will be spent on upgrades around Forrest Place and Forrest Chase in the next year.
