I've gotta say, breathing the air in the middle of Platform 5 at Central thirty seconds after it went through, I was glad to live in the age of electrification.

Wonder why it's not heading up under its own steam  :conf

Ironic that the trucking industry is struggling with "rail" freight  :)

mufreight

Who knows, perhaps the logistics of running a railway are beyond QR now.  One would think that it could have made the run north with a consist of two water gins, a wagon of coal and two carriages with the seats sold to offset the costs and the publicity that could be gained from such a movement would be sufficient to justify the effort and expense of working it north by rail, but perhaps the non rail background management had other ideas.

Thanks the photos mufreight  :clp:

Give me a shovel and I would have driven it up for them for free  :lo

Was a tender also sent up mu?  There was a talk of a double header back, but it might be just a replacement for 1079.

Will be a double header back from Townsville to Brisbane. Or, at least, that's the plan!

Photographers have obviously never been in the cab to see how limited the forward vision is, particularly the one on Bety's left (right of camera) who would have been obscured by the boiler most of the way.

They'll be doing a long haul on Tuesday, traveling from Mackay to Gladstone. Unknown when it will continue on to Brisbane. Fingers crossed they still bring it down on Wednesday!

Queensland Rail

Our crews have been assessing more than 230km of track on the North Coast line following Cyclone Marcia, with the view to reopen the network between Mackay and Rockhampton tomorrow (Tues 24 Feb).

This section suffered a number of impacts including local power outages, significant amount of debris on the tracks and a small washout north of Rockhampton.

A number of our long distance services have been affected, including our steam train. Here is a new timetable so you can get along to see Bety: http://goo.gl/xxPJni

Someone commented on Facebook about leaking steam pipes - not sure if fact.

Disappointing to hear.
