Just one question bothering me...

The staircase on Platform 3/4 seems to be quite wide. How will passengers disembarking behind the staircase be able to access it safely without crossing over the yellow safety line? Also, how will wheelchair users be able to get to the centre of the platform if the staircase is blocking the pathway towards the lift? Are they planning to widen the platform?

ozbob

I had a good look at it.  The stairs seem offset towards platform 4. This leaves room on the platform 3 side for a wheelchair.
I agree though it is tight.  As far as I am aware there is no plan to widen the platform.  If anyone knows any more please let us know.

The access on the platform 4 side against the stairs will be blocked, this is similar to a platform at Corinda (1 from memory?).

Regards
Bob

I heard that around school-finishing time, the platforms are packed with school children.  Perhaps widening the platform would be a good idea.

Yes, using platforms 3 and 4 it was tight, but manageable.
Now that platforms 1 and 2 back in use no real issues other than normal platform usage problems.

They had speed restrictions during the peaks for platforms 3 and 4, but no longer as back on the up and down suburban lines.

It might be difficult to widen the platform as there is not much room.

It is not possible to simply "widen the platform". The main line would have to be shifted. To do that they'd have to widen the "cutting" which would mean they'd have to remove part of Coonan Street. Not going to happen.

Platform 3/4 at Indooro is only used for the occasional express service. It's no narrower than any of the other platforms servicing the main line. If the stairs are that much of a concern they could close the section of platform behind them which would only make the front door of the front car unusable.

Pity that they did not raise the platforms while they were at it but it would seem to be in keeping with other works that have been carried out of late which would appear to be intended by gouernment to be seen to be doing something but unfortunately fall short of the bar and tend to discourage rather than attract commuters by making their facilities more user friendly and safer, which raises the question, WHY?

ButFli

Platforms 3 & 4 cannot be raised and still allow diesel locos through. Freight is the line's primary purpose.

mufreight

That diesel locos use the line is no reason not to raise the platform levels, by moving the coping back and then raising the platform level it is quite simple, if you have a look at the raised section at Brunswick Street you will note that running clearance has been maintained by moving the coping back on the raised section, a 100mm gap is preferable to and safer than a 450mm + step up with a correspondingly larger gap under the step.
At floor level an EMU is the same width as the maximum dimension locos 28, 40, 41 & PN classes.
Next.

It seems platforms 3 and 4 are being raised. The coping on the platform 4 side is anyway. I got a warm fuzzy feeling in my tummy when I arrived at the station this morning to observe two blokes laying what look like concrete pavers onto the existing coping. I'm retarded.

Although to be fair the 60mm increase in height is trivial.

Platforms 3 and 4 are open this weekend at Indooroopilly, 11-12 Oct 2008.

Although this photograph of an up Ipswich service at Indooroopilly platform 3 suggests the station is not yet ready. Indeed, a lot of work is still to be done but everything was well fenced off and there are no real issues.  Work is proceeding around platform 1 and 2 this weekend.

Extensive murals of a seascape type of scene are presently being painted on the walls opposite platform 4.

I get a bit sea sick these days at Indooroopilly ...   :-r

Still it is nice and bright in terms of colours, and very different for a railway station!
