MOTORISTS already struggling with record high petrol prices will soon be slugged again with an 11 per cent hike in Brisbane's motorway toll charges.
Tolls on the Gateway and Logan motorways will rise by nearly three times the level of inflation from July 1.

Motorists in cars and small trucks will pay $2.90, up from $2.60, to cross the Gateway, while the fee for heavy vehicles will jump 70  to $7.20. Those using the Gateway Extension or Logan Motorway will pay between 10 and 60  more.

Brisbane Motorways chief executive Phil Mumford said this year's higher-than-inflation rise would fund necessary road improvements including the $1.8 billion Gateway upgrade.

In 2005, the State Government announced it would index tolls to the Consumer Price Index every year, to gradually increase tolls to the levels they should have been if CPI increases had occurred between 1998 and 2005.

At the time, then Main Roads Minister Paul Lucas said the car toll was expected to be $3.10 in 2011 - just 20 above what it will be from July 1.

Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg said the price hikes came at the worst possible time for Queenslanders already struggling to balance budgets.

Comment:  No doubt this will possibly force more folks onto public transport.

Yes and those of us using public transport are about to be whacked around the head and shoulders with a hefty increase in paper ticket prices potentially far in excess of the measly 11% for toll roads in a few short days from now (or at least that is the word on the street)
