No surprise given the ALP left the state in $80bn of debt and the LNP has been left to clean it up. Not being an LNP apologist, but looking beyond public transit, the government has had a pretty crappy job.

In terms of PT, for about 75% of the electorate this is (unfortunately) is a non-issue - but that's arguably more a reflection on how bad our system is and how (subsequently) few people use it. I suggest catching a bus to (extended) family members and they look at me like I've suggested they sell their house for a peanut. I have friends which have cars and beyond trips into Uni/City, they don't use public transport at all.

The swing against the LNP is nothing surprising - it happens to every government after a landslide victory. There was no way the LNP were going to gain votes at the next election. I suspect at the upcoming election we will have a 1998 election-type result, with Palmer picking up numerous seats in the outer suburbs and on the Sunshine Coast, picking up the disillusioned voters who don't want to vote for what is still a dysfunctional ALP. The dangerous thing about Palmer is his recent actions have illustrated that Palmer only has his own interests in mind and not the state's/country's interests, and that his MPs and Senators are merely his puppets.

This upcoming election, I expect to see 50 seats for the LNP, 12 for PUP, 30 for ALP and remainder for independents/KAP. May very well even see a Greens member slip in in either Mt Coot-Tha or Brisbane divisions (where the Greens now regularly out poll the ALP).
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Careful not to believe LNP spin.  The debt was caused by the GFC and successive natural disasters.  The ALP happened to be in power at the time.  The ALP started to reign it in by doing things like offering redundancies to public servants, cutting back in various areas and selling some government assets.  Unfortunately this wasn't enough for the LNP so when they won the election, the changed legislation so that they could sack 14000 public servants, they shut down a heap of government services and now they want to sell a heap more government assets.

Some might say that this is the right thing to do.  Ultimately the people will decide at the next election.

Spot on!  While public transport is a big issue for us here, it's just one issue - and a non-issue for many Queenslanders.

I think your prediction sounds about right.  I'd like to see the ALP win MORE seats, but that's my opinion.  PUP is a bit of a wildcard.  Yes they'll pick up seats.  I predict that eventually the PUP members will move more towards a democratic party and collaborate/vote on policy, which will upset Clive and he'll end up chucking a hissy and disowning the party (and remove financial support).  It'll be another "One Nation".

In SEQ public transport is a big issue.  Polling consistently confirms that.  It is also important in all regional centres with Q-connect but lesser.

During the Griffith by election it was also rating very high, paradoxically.  I know because I took part in a number of tele-conference town hall meetings, which were polled.

The LNP will lose heaps of seats in SEQ if the fare issue particularly is not addressed, no doubt about it.  Don't under estimate word of mouth seething resentment.

Sunshine Coast could easily see a cluster of PUP candidates being successful.  The natives are not happy there.

Bring on #qldvotes !   :P

And the rest. Gold-plated Eastern Busway. Half-baked S2K triplication without realignment. Half-baked extension of Sunshine Coast duplication to Beerburrum instead of Landsbourough (which combined with buses and an hourly service to Landsbourough, would have catered to 75% of the Sunny Coast anyway). And finally, total failure to act on CRR. Peter Beattie knew there was a problem with inner city rail capacity in 2006, and it was evident in 2008. Instead of acting, the 5-year fare fail commenced. Beattie should have acted in 2008, had CRR under construction in 2010 and finished by 2014-15.

I still think it is criminal that CRR/UBAT/BUM/some tunnel with Thomas the Tank Engine running through it hasn't been built yet. We needed it yesterday, and still it is the subject of fuking around. I have no hope that any government will actually start building anything before 2018 either.

And we can't forget the debacle that is Queensland Health. How things got so BAD there is beyond me. Money was wasted left, right and centre by the previous government, and given the debt is costing $4bn in debt every year, it needs to be reduced and projects postponed unless there is too much cost in NOT letting them go ahead.

PT explicitly, or just transit generally? The vibes I get on the street generally is that PT is a minor issue. Maybe it is just the type of people I hang around can afford (and do) drive and live in areas with poor public transport.

The Australian --> Labor leads as Campbell Newman declines: Newspoll

Quote

CAMPBELL Newman's government has fallen behind Labor in support for the first time, with the Premier's personal popularity also continuing to slide as he gears up to lead the Liberal National Party to an election due early next year.

Two years after scoring the biggest election win in Australian history, the latest Newspoll shows the LNP is trailing Labor by 49 per cent to 51 per cent after preferences, a swing of almost 14 percentage points since the victory ...

7 NEWS --> I don't want to lead LNP: Langbroek

QuoteI don't want to lead LNP: Langbroek

Queensland's education minister says he has no interest in leading his party again should Premier Campbell Newman lose his seat.

John-Paul Langbroek says he's confident Mr Newman will retain his Ashgrove seat at the next election.

Political commentators have said the LNP is likely to retain government but Mr Newman will lose his seat, leaving the party to scramble for a new leader.

Mr Langbroek, who was opposition leader from 2009-11, says Mr Newman is the best person to lead the party, and he wouldn't comment on speculation that Treasurer Tim Nicholls and Transport Minister Scott Emerson are considered likely successors.

"We're not speculating on things like that. We're focused on doing things that are important for Queensland," he told ABC radio.

"The people of Queensland will decide when we have an election.

"I"m happy doing the job I'm doing."

Mr Newman this week backflipped on three controversial policies in a bid to show voters he's listening to them, and isn't too proud to admit his mistakes.

The backdown followed a 18.6 per cent swing against the LNP in a weekend by-election in Stafford, which neighbours the premier's Ashgrove electorate.

A number of political commentators have said Mr Newman will lose the seat at the next poll, but the LNP will scrap back into power.

The commentators include election analyst Malcolm Mackerras, who worked for the federal Liberal Party during the 1960s.

He's predicted a 10 per cent swing against the LNP, reducing it from 73 to 50 seats, but still see the party keeping its majority in the 89-seat parliament.

MAN Buses makes superbuses, but there are a few suppliers, Most bus manufacturers come from Europe - Scania, MAN, Volvo etc...
http://www.bus.man.eu/global/en/city-buses/man-lions-city/overview/Overview.html

Capacity is up to 160 on the buses but for comfort and customisation (i.e. disability provision etc) 150 is practical.

QuoteWith its wide product range in its Lion's City city bus low-floor bus programme, MAN provides the optimal model for every use: the Lion's City M 10.50 m short solo bus model is the ideal solution for extremely narrow inner city roads with its turning circle of only 18 m. In our classic bus, the MAN Lion's City low floor solo bus, a horizontally installed MAN D20 common rail engine is used. Additionally, MAN offers the Lion's City G and Lion's City GL standard articulated buses. With its impressive length of 18.75 m, the Lion's City GL easily transports more than 160 people.

Even more room for passengers and better manoeuvrability compared to vehicle length are offered by the two three-axle city buses in the programme: the MAN Lion's City L with a length of 14.70 m as well as the one-metre shorter MAN Lion's City C. Both buses have an active steered third axle.
