Queensland Rail (QR) says further investigations are needed on a proposed new rail service in the state's central region.

Capricorn Enterprise has suggested a new rail service from Rockhampton to Bundaberg, to ease shortages of labour and housing in Gladstone.

QR spokesman Martin Ryan says the idea is yet to be formally discussed.

"We are looking at all ways we can grow tourism and also commerce throughout the regions of Queensland," he said.

"Queensland Rail is a major part of the transport solution for Queensland.

"Last year we carried over 72,000 in and out of the Rockhampton region, so we want to talk with all operators and commerce people to see how we can help them grow their business and also grow tourism."

Mr Ryan says there as still a lot of work to do.

"Queensland Rail is working its traditional routes that it runs at the moment," he said.

"We are working with enterprises around Queensland to see how we can help them grow their regions and their businesses, so we'll be talking to lots of people so we can grow not only tourism but also commerce.

"We have not had those direct conversations and we'll wait for those to be brought forward."
