EXTRA police will be patrolling Sydney's buses and trains as part of an operation targeting people who avoid paying ticket fares.

The six-week operation, which ends on May 24, will involve dozens of green-vested officers on foot and on bikes around major transport interchanges.

Officers will target people who misuse concessions and zone ticketing, produce fake concession products or tickets, and bypass ticketing gates.

"Police won't take a backward step and will focus on taking legal action against offenders, rather than issuing warnings," Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell said on Monday.

Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

I spent 3 weeks in Newcastle in April i travelled by train between Kotara and Maitland changing trains often, Yes i had a ticket but at no stage was i ever asked to see it, one or two station had no ticket machine yet there were signs saying you must travell with a valid ticket. Once while on the train police sniffer dogs went through the train from Maitland to Beresfield. When there is no-one checking tickets in some areas is it any reason people ride for free.

If there is no ticket machine and the ticket office is unattended, you are permitted to pay at your destination.  It has always been thus.  FWIW.

Not that I'm disagreeing with your comments.
