Here's one for the brains trust

July 2012 Shorncliffe timetable Weekday AM peak
Below I have tried to match up what appears to be the city bound peak flow with the outbound services that providing the train. As you can see there are three trains city bound with visible outbound service to provide as a feeder.

First 2 no dramas, you run two empty movements. (not sure if they store trains at SC overnight)
The Departing 7:23 also has no outbound, but assume this is a empty movement betweem the arriving 6:59 amd 7:30 services and that further up the tree this trains has come from elsewhere and needs to run non-stop to get there fast.

Now the real question, the Outbound 7:48 ex Sandgate arrives Shorncliffe at 7:50, however a Citybound train leaves Shorncliffe at  7:49 and arrives at Sandgate at 7:50. Now this is single track!
So the city bound train departments when the outbound train is half way along the single track? With a running time of 2min in the timetable for both trains, there is no waiting.

From City
Sandgate_   ?___   ?___   6:00   6:39   6:57   ?___   7:28   7:48   8:16   8:34   8:55
Shorncliffe   ?___   ?___   6:02   6:41   6:59   ?___   7:30   7:50   8:18   8:36   8:57

Shorncliffe   5:15   5:50   6:19   6:49   7:09   7:23   7:49   8:04   8:23   8:43   9:07
Sandgate_   5:17   5:52   6:21   6:51   7:11   7:25   7:51   8:06   8:25   8:45   9:09
To City

Another way to look at it, but its only single track

Outbound Train Sandgate  7:48--------------Train position 7:49--------------->7:50 Shorncliffe
Citybound Train Sandgate  7:51<------------------------------------------------- 7:49 Shorncliffe

Any ideas whats going on?

somebody

I'd say the 7:50am Shorncliffe arrival runs late.  The 7:51am city train at Sandgate probably is the one which uses platform 2.

It's not the only example of an impossible timetable, I believe.
