Coach company Greyhound Australia has announced it will start daily coach services from Mackay Airport to the Whitsundays to help fill the gap caused by air service cutbacks.

Qantas and Jetstar have announced they will cut both domestic and international services to the region due to skyrocketing fuel prices.

Greyhound chief executive Robert Thomas today said the company was reworking schedules to try to soften the flow-on effect to the local tourism industry.

"We are working very hard behind the scenes to rearrange our services to allow more people to get to the Whitsundays," Mr Thomas said.

He said governments needed to give coaches better access to airports as a way to move tourists around Australia, especially in regional areas.

With the cutbacks to flights, increases in fuel costs and further 'levy' charges time is ripe for rail passenger services to ramp up too.
