Newman Government green lights 12-storey high-rises near Brisbane River in West End

DEVELOPERS will get the green light to build 12-storey high-rises near the Brisbane River in West End after the State Government signed off on the plan this month.

The controversial decision affects about six sites in a section of West End bounded by Forbes St, Montague Rd and Vulture St, which will be eligible for the higher density development due to their size, according to council.

The plan had been rejected by the former Labor State Government which restricted the height limit to seven storeys.

The West End Community Association and local councillor Helen Abrahams had also actively campaigned against allowing 12-storey development in that area, saying West End did not have the services or the infrastructure to support the extra residents.

Premier Campbell Newman pledged his government would reverse the decision and have done so.

Must be some of Newman's mates who stand to make a quick buck out of this one.

I've got no issue with this.
Sometimes I think people forget Brisbane is a city, and cities have tall buildings.

The area in question sits on a high frequency bus which runs 24 hours on weekends, so the PT is there for it.

The only issue I see is that if they continue like this, the bus route won't be enough. They want all this development but haven't said much about infrastructure provision to make it work. Not just transport either.

That said though, given the preexisting PT network in the area, you would think the PT usage of the new residents would be pretty high thus driving demand for a higher capacity service.
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
