This Saturday May 17, the community will be able to see the results of months of hard work when the Nambour District Historical Museum unveils a fully restored Eudlo locomotive.

The unveiling of the 1925 relic of Nambour?s sugar heritage will take place the same day scores of Queensland museums stage special events to celebrate the start of International Museum Week.

Clive Plater said he had fond memories of watching Eudlo transport sugar cane to the mill with his father in the driver?s seat.

?Eudlo reminds local community members of the sight and sounds of those mighty steam engines pulling countless bins of cane up along Howard Street and then across Currie Street into the mill,? he said.

?We hope to see our whole community get behind this celebration of our local heritage and join us in acknowledging a time when Nambour relied on the sugar industry,? he said.

Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
17/05/2008

Retired locomotive 'Eudlo' restored to former glory

The restored "Eudlo" steam locomotive has today been unveiled at the Nambour and District Historical Museum.

Representing the Minister for Public Works Robert Schwarten, Minister for Main Roads and Local Government Warren Pitt said the "Eudlo" was restored with the aid of a $15,000 grant from the Community Memorials Restoration Program.

"The Queensland Government was proud to partner with Nambour and District Historical Museum members to restore the famous "Eudlo" loco," Mr Pitt said.

"The "Eudlo" is part of the area's sugar industry heritage and a colourful and interesting reminder of Nambour's days as a sugar milling town.

"The Moreton Central Sugar Mill, including the Chief Engineer's office, machinery salvaged from the mill enclosure and of course the "Eudlo" are core aspects of the museum's extensive local history displays."

Mr Pitt said museum members had voluntarily given many hours to the preservation of Nambour's heritage.

"The unveiling of the restored "Eudlo" is another occasion for the community to celebrate the people and industries of the district and is a credit to the volunteers who worked on the project," he said.

Mr Pitt said the Community Memorials Restoration Program, administered by the Department of Public Works, provided dollar-for-dollar grants for projects across Queensland.

Since 2004, the program has provided grants to assist local governments and community organisations to restore, repair, record, preserve and promote awareness of historical development in communities.

Since the Community Memorials Restoration Program started, $1.75 million has been spent by the Queensland Government restoring repairing 200 memorials across the State.
