Brisbanetimes --> Bus strike likely as council workers rage over pay offer

QuoteBrisbane residents are being warned to prepare for a bus driver strike, with 7000 furious council staff from a range of different sectors on the verge of taking industrial action.

The council has offered workers a 2 per cent wage increase - and an extra $400 for each person if absentee rates improve - in a move which has ''bewildered and embarrassed'' workers, particularly in light of councillors' $57,000-$96,000 pay rise.

The council's bus drivers, heavy machinery drivers and electricians have voted to take industrial action in protest against the offer, Services Union assistant state secretary Neil Henderson said on Tuesday night.

''Everybody else will [vote and] be counted tomorrow,'' he said ....

Brisbane Transport Bus Strike On The Cards?

Greetings,

It looks like Brisbane City Council's bus network may go down in strike action. We have consistently warned that the bus network is politically, operationally and financially unsustainable. Failure to control spiralling costs will cause cannibalisation of other core functions of the council.

Separating Brisbane Transport from Brisbane City Council should be seriously considered.  The Brisbane Bus network needs to be brought into a proper integrated public transport network, free from politics.

Good advice is best not ignored.

Brisbanetimes --> Bus drivers to strike over pay

QuoteBrisbane bus drivers will stop work next week, according to the Rail Tram and Bus Union.

The stoppage will occur on Friday, July 19 between 10am and 2pm, assistant state secretary David Matters said.

"That means the buses will stop in that period," he said.

All council staff are voting this week to protest Brisbane City Council's 2 per cent pay rise offer.

Bus Drivers to Strike?

10 July 2013 , 6:10 PM by Craig Zonca

Bus Drivers are unhappy about the two percent wage increase they've been offered by the Brisbane City Council.

And union members have voted in favour of a strike.

Tim Cox spoke to David Matters, the Assistant Secretary of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union and asked him where negotiations are at:

Set in train

No concern for SE Busway or Carindale users, simply wait for a 555 or 250 and likely enjoy a faster, friendlier ride into town.

This highlights one of the many reasons that makes it handy to have the 250 and 555 continue all the way into the CBD.

Atleast there won't be as many empty buses running around across the northside :fp:

Goodness - no Gympie Road bus conga line? No Coronation Drive conga party? I don't think I'll be able to cope. Interesting question will be whether other bus providers (e.g. Veolia) are asked by TransLink to put on additional services.

Maybe if they strike enough, BCC will save enough money to give them a pay rise.  :-r
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Jonno

Lucky that Translink didn't get to implement their review or this strike might actually impact the City! As it is it will just save money !!

I'm on dayshift on Friday but it would be interesting to see how that impacts on train patronage ie Ipswich/Richlands lines.
