SEQ: Coronation Drive Transit Lane - help!

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers has called for the delivery of the previously promised transit lane for Coronation Drive.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"In 2008, the Council promised to return the inbound transit lane to Coronation Drive  after the Go Between Bridge was built (1).  This never occurred.  Similarly, the Story Bridge's approaches, particularly Shafston Ave, Lytton Rd and Wynnum Rd are crying out for bus lanes in the morning peak."

"This election campaign has seen promises such as those concerning fares policy,  which it is difficult to see how it is really a council matter, and the ludicrous 'Maroon Cityglider' plan, however the important issue of bus priority has not received any prominence (2), (3).  More buses will need to be bought if  buses are to be continually stuck in congested traffic in peak hour."

"Part of the solution to the peak 'bus-jam'  and congestion is proper bus priority.  This in turn will encourage more citizens to use the fast buses and in so doing help relieve the overall road congestion."

"Good thing the Queensland Government has dropped the 'Smart State' motor vehicle number plates.  Smart state is an oxymoron!"

The Brisbane City Council says a transit lane will be reintroduced on Coronation Drive once a new bridge is built.

Council last night completed the dismantling of the road's electronic tidal flow system.

The system was deactivated with the aim of improving traffic flow.

Deputy Mayor Graham Quirk says the final gantry was removed last night.

"We've come in a couple of days ahead of schedule in terms of the time for the dismantling of the Coronation Drive tidal flow system," he said.

"We originally thought this would be a $1 million dismantling - it's come in at a little under $700,000, so that's good news."

He said a T2 lane will be put in place once the Hale Street Bridge is finished.

"Previously we've seen a bus lane and T3 which only allowed for a very small number of motor vehicles," he said.

"The T2 operation will provide faster bus travel and also will provide for up to 20 per cent of motorists to utilise that lane."

A Brisbane City Council promise to reinstate transit lanes on Coronation Drive after the Go Between Bridge was finished is still unfulfilled almost two years down the track.

In 2008, then-deputy mayor Graham Quirk told ABC News a T2 lane would be put in place on Coronation Drive once the Hale St bridge was completed. It was finished in July 2010.

"The T2 operation will provide faster bus travel and also will provide for up to 20 per cent of motorists to utilise that lane," Cr Quirk was quoted as saying.

Current Deputy Mayor and Infrastructure chairman Adrian Schrinner said no decision would be made on T2 lanes until after the completion of the Legacy Way tunnel at the end of 2014.

"Legacy Way is expected to reduce congestion on Coronation Drive by about 10 per cent on opening," Cr Schrinner said.

But public transport lobby group Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said there was no evidence there would be a major reduction in Coronation Drive traffic once the tunnel opened.

Golliwog

Great to see one of the local papers chasing this up. Poor to see it being fobbed off with "we'll decide after the next great big new congestion busting bridge/tunnel/road opens" Oh, it didn't do anything? I guess you can't put in those T2 lanes then yet until we solve the congestion.
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
