QuoteTube Tunnel Collapses On Bakerloo Line, Say RMT

Thursday 26th April 2012

A tube tunnel has collapsed on the Bakerloo Line under the River Thames, according to reports.

The RMT says the problem has happened between Embankment and Waterloo. The Bakerloo Line is currently suspended between Piccadilly Circus and Elephant and Castle.

The London Fire Bridage have been called, while the London Ambulance Service is also on the scene, but were not required.

Transport for London told LBC 97.3 there is an obstruction on the line and wouldn't deny that the tunnel had collapsed, but were waiting for more information.

Maintenaince workers on Tube Lines contracts are currently on a 72-hour strike. However, TfL says its response to problems has been unaffected by the strike.

There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Later reports suggest an ' obstruction ' or possibly a train hit the wall.  Still very confusing ..

Tunnel appears to be intact.

QuoteBakerloo Line Tunnel "Obstruction" At Embankment
By Rachel Holdsworth · April 26, 2012 at 10:01 am ·

The Bakerloo Line is suspended between Piccadilly Circus and Elephant and Castle due to what Transport for London is calling "an obstruction in tunnel at Embankment". Confusion currently reigns over whether it's a partial tunnel collapse or a whether a train struck a more mysterious object. The BBC's Tom Edwards has been told by London Underground engineers that's it's not a tunnel collapse as there's no flooding.

We'll keeping an eye on what's happening and update this post when we get more information. LBC reports that although ambulances were called, they weren't needed, so it looks like nobody was hurt.

QuoteBakerloo line train hits obstruction

A London Underground train has hit an obstruction on the tracks, causing severe delays.

The Bakerloo line between Elephant & Castle and Piccadilly Circus was suspended, while the rest of the line was severely disrupted.

Transport for London (TfL) said the tunnel had not collapsed and that no-one was injured.

It comes as maintenance workers on three lines are on strike but the Bakerloo Line is not one of them.

QuoteRMT insist it is a 'partial tunnel collapse'

Our reps understand that the suspension of Bakerloo line services is due to a partial tunnel collapse at Embankment that is currently under investigation.

This emergency incident exposes TfL's cavalier attitude to the work of its emergency response unit and exposes once again their willingness to chance their arm on public safety.

QuoteBakerloo line suspended after tube hits tunnel; no casualties

Commuters in London faced severe delays this morning as the Bakerloo line was suspended after a train was believed to hit a tunnel.

Overnight maintenance work was thought to have moved the inner ring of the tube tunnel near Embankment on the River Thames.

The problem was reported at around 7.30am when a train apparently clipped part of the Underground.

Transport for London suspended the line between Piccadilly Circus and Elephant and Castle, reporting an obstruction on the line.

There were also severe delays on the rest of the line, which runs from north to south London.

The London Fire Brigade and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service were on the scene but it is understood there were no injuries and the damage was not thought to be serious.

A spokesman for Transport for London (TfL) said: "There is definitely no tunnel collapse.

"We're trying to find out what the actual situation is but we're fairly certain the structural integrity of the tunnel hasn't been damaged."

He added early indications were that grouting between the inner and outer rings of the tunnel had caused the rings to move slightly.

British Transport Police were called at around 7.30am after reports of a problem near Embankment in London. Officers said they were awaiting an update.

The London Fire Brigade was called to the station just after 6am amid reports of "smoke".

Crews left the scene just over an hour later, a spokesman said. He declined to comment further.

At Embankment Tube station the escalators were closed due to the "fire alert".

Maintenaince workers on Tube Lines contracts are currently on a 72-hour strike. However, TfL says its response has been unaffected by the strike.

Can see how it happened. All the tunnel segments are curved cast iron segments that get bolted together.
