QUEENSLAND Rail's Sunlander has gained international recognition, being named as one of National Geographic's top 10 unique train trips in the world.

The Sunlander, which travels regularly between Brisbane and Cairns, was named at No. 5 on the list, edging out India, England and Sri Lanka.

"The rail journeys in this list have awe-inspiring views and they travel over incredible terrain, so it really is an honour for our iconic train to be included alongside these experiences," QR Travel general manager Max Kruse said.

"Over the past few decades, the Sunlander has built a worldwide reputation as one of the planet's great rail journeys."

Train trips in North America, South America and New Zealand rounded out the top four.

Published in the latest edition of National Geographic's Secret Journeys of a Lifetime book, the Sunlander is quoted as having a "superbly luxurious service", while also making mention of its local cuisine and sleeping-car facilities.

The train service was also given full marks by the Society of International Rail Travellers, who named it among a list of the top 25 rail journeys in the world for 2012.

I'm guessing they didn't travel in economy class then?  :P

I'm guessing that the speed allows for a more scenic journey ...
