A man was killed when a train crashed into his car at a Melbourne railway station in peak hour.

The car and train crashed at the Cheltenham Railway Station about 4.15pm (AEDT) on Friday.

The dead man was believed to be the car's driver.

Police say at this stage it is not known if anyone else was in the car.

The railway station has been closed and a road blocked to all traffic.

The state's road toll stands at 68 compared with 54 at the same time last year.
