A teenager has been killed by a train while running after a dog northwest of Melbourne.

It's believed the 15-year-old boy was attempting to get to the dog when he was struck by the Ballarat-bound V-Line train at Warrenheip, near Ballarat, at about 9pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

The accident took place on train tracks beneath the Warrenheip Rd railway bridge.

The boy died at the scene, police said.

It is not know whether the dog escaped from a nearby property.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
