MELBOURNE must have a fast rail link from the city to Tullamarine airport within 10 years or Victoria's economic and tourism growth will suffer, the RACV has warned.

President Peter Chandler said: ''Melbourne's business sustainability, economic growth and tourism potential will not be realised if this link is not provided within the next decade.''

Writing in the RACV's monthly Royal Auto magazine, Mr Chandler said passenger numbers were expected to almost double at the airport by 2027 and ''existing transport facilities are stretched to the limit, with the freeway suffering extended delays during morning and evening peaks''.

The Baillieu government is spending $6.5 million on a two-year feasibility study into a Melbourne airport rail link.

It will be challenging to fund that when they are still also arguing for the East-West Link (and they are much more likely to be listened to on that proposal than this one).

IMO any Tulla rail link should be done using HSR track standard gauge and 25kV and built to run at the speed you'd run a HSR train approaching a terminus (160-200 km/h ?)

That way, if Aus ever does get HSR, it will be a case of plugging in at Tulla and going north.
