Media Release 19 April 2008

SEQ:  Can the ?Smart? State match the southern State?

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport commuters has called for community focused innovative public transport initiatives on the Translink network.

?The Victorian State Government has recently announced free travel for the three days over the ANZAC weekend for Veterans and War Widows.?

?Travel on Victoria?s public transport network will be free for veterans and war widows as part of the commemorations for ANZAC Day during the entire public holiday and weekend of 24, 25 and 26 April 2008,? said Robert Dow, spokesman for RAIL Back On Track.

To qualify for free travel, veterans and war widows simply need to:

    * Wear their uniform; or
    * Wear their service medals; or
    * Wear an ex-service association or returned from active service or war widows badge; or
    * Present their DVA Gold or White card; or
    * Present their Category ?V? Victorian Public Transport Concession Card. (1)

?We congratulate the Victorian Government for their initiative.?

?Victoria also has set the pace for other community focused public transport initiatives too.?

?For example they have free early bird travel in place across the entire suburban rail network.  Senior citizens have free public transport on Sundays.  They have significant discounts for weekend and off peak travel for all.?

?Congestion is taking its toll (2). It is time similar innovation was done in the ?Smart? State (3)," said Robert Dow.
