Tennis fans continue to ignore restrictions
QuoteTennis fans have continued to fall foul of parking inspectors, with nearly 200 fines issued around the Queensland Tennis Centre at Tennyson on day three of play.

Over the first three days of the Brisbane International tournament, nearly 700 parking fines had been issued.

However, a Translink spokesman said about 80 per cent of the tennis fans attending the Brisbane International used public transport to get to the venue.

On Wednesday, there were 196 parking fines issued to people parking in the streets around the tennis centre. Yesterday's figures should be available today.

Over the first two days of play, exactly 500 parking fines were issued, bringing the three-day total to 696.

Brisbane City Council last year amended parking restrictions to enforce a one-hour parking zone between 7am and 10pm to ensure residents were not crowded out by tennis fans.

Ascot fan Sarah Sullivan said she drove to the tennis because Brisbane's public transport was inadequate.

She were surprised to receive a $50 parking fine and said there should be more signs.

"We live over at Ascot and we never really get public transport anywhere because public transport is crap in Brisbane," Ms Sullivan said.

"We always drive everywhere. We thought there would be parking actually, we thought there would be parking included at the tennis centre."

Ms Sullivan said it "never" occurred to her, or her partner Graeme, to catch the train to the tennis.

Graeme said the public transport would take two hours and their ticket only allowed them to watch games until lunch time, and he would not catch public transport after receiving the $50 fine.

"On principle I wouldn't give them the time of day. I would drive my car and park somewhere else," he said.
Tennis fans can travel to Yeerongpilly station on the Beenleigh line and walk 500 metres, or get off at Corinda station and catch a free shuttle bus to the tennis centre.

However, the Translink spokesman said there was no intention to reopen the nearby station at Tennyson, on the Corinda - Yeerongpilly branch line, during the Brisbane International.

"Tennyson station is no longer open and is not considered safe for large numbers of passengers," he said.

Overall, there have been 1001 residential parking permits issued to Tennyson residents, allowing them to park around the tennis centre.

Of those, 266 residents have parking permit stickers which be fixed permanently to each car registered at their address and 288 have portable passes, shared between visitor's cars.

I thought the only issue with Tennyson was that it was a 3 car platform?

They should use Yerongpilly station. No Tennyson.
It is close enough.

Also a low height platform, but I can see the issue with getting a large crowd on the platform.  It would be dangerous.  I don't know about it being a reason not to do it though.

Lower than most of the other platforms that are in use around the place?

Oh no.

"Dangerous" isn't really a reason in this case IMO.  It's dangerous to leave the house.  They just need to manage it properly.

People need to harden up and just walk to Yeerongpilly or if their lazy get the bus to Corinda.

No argument with the first part, but I can understand them being annoyed by having to walk to Yeerongpilly if they live at Ipswich.

And I bet Ms Sullivan didn't do her homework with the trains.  They just did what they always did, jumped in the car and drove off.  Of course there needs to be upgrades to the network, but at the same time, there also needs to be constant education about what's available locally if you want to head out and about.  While it's nice to have 15 minute services all day, without the education side of things, people will just stick to what they know, and that doesn't apply exclusively to public transport either.

I have no sympathy for Ms Sullivan and she can only blame herself. If she took the time to check out the event website she would have seen that her ticket to the tennis enables free travel on trains to and from the event all day long, It also enables her to free travel on BT buses near by to and from the event along with free shuttle buses to Corinda station. She would have also found links to parking restrictions in the area.

Get the free shuttle bus to Corinda!

Q: Which train station do I travel to?
A:  There are two options.  If you live along the Beenleigh and Gold Coast train line, the closest station to the Queensland Tennis Centre is Yeerongpilly, a short 15 minutes walk away. If you are travelling on the Ipswich, Caboolture or Shorncliffe train line, Corinda is the closest station to the Queensland Tennis Centre. Event bus shuttles will operate between the station and the Queensland Tennis Centre.

Q: Will there be bus shuttles from Corinda?
A: Yes, shuttle buses will operate to and from Corinda train station

Q: Will there be shuttle buses from Yeerongpilly train station?
A: Maxi taxi shuttles for people with special needs will be available from Yeerongpilly train station to the Queensland Tennis Centre.

Ha Ha!  They recommend people on the Shorncliffe line go via Corinda.  That would have only made any sense when the trains ran through, but even then I don't like the idea much.  Clearly not updated since last year.  Central-Yeerongpilly is a 20 minute run, all stations.  22 minute Central-Corinda, but you then need to use a shuttle bus.  I for one would prefer the via Yeerongpilly option as it saves a transfer.

Doomben and Cleveland line people can also pick up the 104 at Park Rd.

Jonas Jade

It will take 2 hours from Ascot to Yeerongpilly????

Agree, is it such a big deal during such a major event to run a 3 car shuttle from Yeroongpilly to Corinda. What would it be, 15min round trip? Not sure on connections but you could cycle with Beenleigh and Ipswich train timeables with 1 set surely. It maybe only 3 cars, but its dumping them onto a 6 car set at each end which already has users. So if you need more than 3 cars, you need more trains on the main lines.

Plan B, assuming it fits with timetable would be to start from Park Rd to head to Corinda and back and enable connection with Cleveland and GC trains thus enabling a single change of train.

Shane
Sorry?

The problem is more Central-Yeerongpilly!  We can live without trains on Corinda-Tennyson-Yeerongpilly, but my thinking is that if trains are going to run to Yeerongpilly they may as well just run to Corinda as there is a better turnback arrangement there and during the period of half hourly buses having a half hourly train seems to be a worthy idea.  Not too sure about peak hour though.

Of course, driving Ascot to Yeerongpilly will only take 20 minutes. (Whereis)

PUBLIC TRANSPORT TAKES ONE HOUR!! 60% longer!

And this hasn't even factored in the waiting time components!

And then, if you miss a train on the high frequency Doomben line......  :thsdo

Factor in the time required to find a park (legal or otherwise), and the cost of the inevitable fine in what is known to be an enforcement heavy environment.

Obviously they have chosen to bear that cost in exchange for their convenience, so they have no right to whinge.
Ride the G:

Set in train

There is $20 all day/night parking offered by the Rotary Club with a shuttle bus even.

But in Friday funnies: I encourage them all to take cars, starve the GC express of the need to stop at Yeerongpilly.  :hg

When the public transport to the event is free, and many people still drive, the you know there is something seriously wrong with public transport provision!
