Core Frequent Network: SEQ Transport heads for perfect storm

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers has said that SEQ is now headed for a perfect transport crisis.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"What we have seen in the past few days is the tacit acknowledgement that something is very very wrong with the state of the SEQ transport network. Both the busway system and the rail network are heading towards a capacity crunch at the same time. Major alarm bells should be ringing in the offices in George Street."

"Core rail capacity across the Merivale bridge and through the CBD will max out in 2016, well before Cross River Rail is operational."

"The adjacent busway is also likely to max out in capacity around the same time. The congestion at cultural centre may be relieved by a tunnel, however that won't be built until 2018 if ever, and our concern is that even with a tunnel present, congestion will simply form at stations such as Mater Hill, South Bank and Buranda."

"The simultaneous maxing out of capacity on both busway and railway systems is something that must be avoided. Cross River Rail is required because it will be the long term solution to finally fixing up rail network capacity. There have been plans for this connection since 1970! Let's get this thing built!"

"There may be some scope to divert busway passengers into Cross River Rail by terminating some services at Woolloongabba, however ultimately something also needs to be done about busway core capacity as well, something that the Connecting SEQ 2031 document is completely silent on."

"RAIL Back On Track again asks for the release of detailed policies specifically describing the measures, capacity benefits, time frames and sources of funding for dealing with both core capacity on the rail network and core capacity on the bus system."

"It seems that we are headed for a future where we can't catch a train because that is congested, we can't catch a bus because the busway is congested, and we can't drive because the motorway is congested."

"The failure of both core rail and core busway capacities at the same time must be avoided. It does seem the biggest capacity crisis facing SEQ is a lack of mental capacity on the part of governments, for decades."
