THOUSANDS of commuters all around Australia jumped on their bikes for Ride to Work Day yesterday, but for residents on Brisbane's northside it may not have been that easy.

"It is really hard to ride a bike into the city," said Wooloowin resident Peter Dawson, who planned to participate in the event despite the major obstacles facing riders from the inner north.

Mr Dawson said heavy construction and a lack of off-road routes comparable to bikeways along the Centenary Highway, Coronation Drive and the Pacific Motorway meant commuting by bicycle from the inner north was impractical and dangerous.

"Once you get to that Newmarket Rd area, between there and Royal Brisbane Hospital it's cycle-unfriendly," he said.

"It takes what should be a safe and enjoyable experience and it becomes dangerous and unpleasant and certainly something that you wouldn't want an inexperienced person to do."

Bicycle Queensland manager Ben Wilson said the northside was notoriously bad for cyclists.

"The northside has a tough run because Brisbane's such a quirky town," he said.

Mr Wilson said corridors like Lutwyche Rd and Sandgate Rd were dangerous because they were narrow, and the construction on Airport Link and other projects made it difficult for riders.

Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

Given that the Premier's seat is South Brisbane, the Transport Minister's seat is Inala (as is on the south side of Brisbane) etc.

I wonder if there is a correlation between which political party holds how many seats on the north and south sides of Brisbane.
It may have nothing to do with it whatsoever - but after the Sunshine Coast 24 day post election stop work at Beerburrum experience - you'd have to wonder.
