Another TransLink survey ...

Greetings,

On the 28th April 2010 TransLink announced a network wide public transport survey --> http://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=3769.msg26000#msg26000

Orange bins were placed all over the system and at least 150,000 survey forms distributed.

Has anyone heard about the results of the survey?  As public transport users contributed significantly the least that one would expect would be some public outcomes?

What happened to the orange bins?

Public transport users are now being invited to participate in yet another survey  http://translink.com.au/about-translink/what-we-do/customer-research/customer-satisfaction-survey

Will we be left in the dark on this one too?  A broader question is why these endless costly surveys?  It is obvious what the issues are:

Worst rail frequency for any comparable system.  Failing fare structure for go card.  A network that lacks proper integration  and coordination.

Best wishes
Robert

Didn't TL say it was going to be released late May early June?, Should we try a freedom of information? This truly shows how pathetic this transport agency and government are.
"Where else but Queensland?"

TransLink's Matt Longland was interviewed on 612 ABC Brisbane this morning.  Apparently the survey is to be released publicly later today ...

Do you know which one ozbob ?
The paper one and orange bins from over 12 months ago or the latest online survey.

Now available on the TransLink web site ...

--> http://translink.com.au/about-translink/reporting-and-publications/media-releases/release/366

Hmmm, page 16 seems to have whats closest to a passenger count as I think we'll get. Its an off-peak passenger count between 9am and 3pm, with the % after showing what portion of the all day line count that was.

500 missing commuters from Ferny Grove?
Good question.  It does seem odd.  Was there temporarily reduced car parking at FG in 2010?

Interestingly, Indooroopilly (weekday daytime 15 minute frequency) seems to have around 3900 entries, against 1582 inbound AM boardings and 494 outbound PM boardings in 2009.  Either the patronage has roughly doubled since 2009, the off peak patronage + counter peak roughly equals the peak patronage, or some combination of the two.

Let's try that at Toombul (full 15 minute frequency): around 2200 entries, against 594 inbound AM and 214 outbound PM in 2009.  Seems even more than half is off peak or counter peak.

Now at Zillmere (30 minute frequency off peak): around 1200 entries, against 760 inbound AM and 77 outbound PM in 2009. Under 1/3 of patronage off peak.

Numbers for Bald Hills are around 1400, 923 & 47.
Morayfield around 1300, 651 & 33.
Dakabin around 600, 320 & 18.
Woodridge around 1900, 399, 124
Sandgate around 2100, 1099, 6.
Helensvale around 2800, 959, 84.
Wilston around 700, 463, 36

I still think the conclusion can be drawn that patronage is a function of service quality.  The stations whose service improves dramatically in peak hour get the majority of their patronage in peak hour.  There is also a lower demand for frequency for longer trips as compared to shorter ones.

About 10ish parks when the construction started (next to where the taxi parks where)

We also lost the little parking lot on the corner of Arbor and Conavalla Streets. Not sure when exactly that was though.

Not surprisingly a lot of people seem to be calling baloney on their figures.

I find more interesting the ones trying to say the fact that the data says young females use public transport more is because those collecting the data were young men who handed more out to attractive young women. By way of backing up their claims they say "Look around the morning train/bus/ferry" neglecting the fact that not everyone catches their bus, nor do they all travel at that time. I'd agree that the high proportion they have from their figures is probably not the case, as they encouraged everyone to fill out multiple forms on each trip they took so they could find out more about every trip people took. Thus its very easy to skew data about age and gender when those are taken as aggregate percentages.

A very valid point Golli.

Even if some of their stats are a bit off, I'd still like to point out that the data gathered would still be very useful to transport planners. It gives them info about how and why people use PT (this can't exactly be fed into a tranport model though, at least not easily). But it lets them work on better ways to plan their routes, etc.

Which parking lots? the ones to the side next to the "nature reserve"/park/"what ever they are calling it these days" are still there and were being used last I saw and there wasn't really any parking on the back street apart from the rear entrance to the carpark behind the station which was closed for the temp site units.

Between the bus interchange and Arbor St. The parking lot only had space for maybe 20 or so cars though, but it was there. And it was close to the station entrance too. If you go to nearmap.com try going back a year or so (not sure how long they keep the old maps for though). The carpark now has a pedestrian crossing through the middle of it, as well as the end of the new dead end track.
