Competing faces of Brisbane's CityCat terminals unveiled

Premier Anna Bligh and Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan today unveiled images of the three designs competing to be the face of Brisbane's CityCat terminals.

The Premier said in an unprecedented partnership the Commonwealth and State Governments have committed $145 million to replace the Brisbane Ferry and City Cat Terminals and the Riverwalk.

"Whilst many of the terminals have reopened using temporary pontoons, with the destruction of many of the terminals comes an opportunity to build them back better.

"It provides us with a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-build our CityCat terminals so they are a truly unique, and instantly recognisable part of our River City," the Premier said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan said that he was excited about the designs and how they would help celebrate Brisbane's iconic river.

"Once completed, the CityCat Terminals will lay symbol to the challenges faced by our city with the floods earlier this year.

"The new terminals also celebrate the exciting future we have ahead of us, a city leading the way when it comes to design, art and culture.

"Although the Brisbane River caused us much heartache earlier this year, we are and always will be the River City and these designs really capture this.

The Premier and Deputy Prime Minister said an expert panel had selected the three finalists from 65 entrants who submitted Expressions of Interest. They are:

Second Nature Collaborative (Candalepas, Owen&Vokes, Richards&Spence Architects) with ARUP
Shane Thompson Architects & Lat27 with Bill Short Engineers
Cox Rayner Architects / Alexander Lotersztain (Derlot)

These finalists have now developed and submitted their full concept designs, which will be on display at the State Library from next Monday.

"This is a great opportunity for us to build back better than before, and create a positive legacy from the devastating events of early 2011," Ms Bligh said.

Under the NDRRA arrangements, the Gillard Government will provide $108.75 million in funding while the Bligh Government will contribute $36.25 million.

Images of their designs can be viewed at www.premiers.qld.gov.au

There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Agree Golli.  :-t  Imagine that structure in the morning river mists. Stunning.

I must say, I prefer the Cox Rayner Architects/Alexander Lotersztain (Derlot) design.

Part of my thinking for supporting the first contender is that the spiderweb design has holes where water could flow through in a future flood, not solid walls that could offer resistence.

A CUTTING-EDGE DESIGN FOR BRISBANE'S FERRY TERMINALS

Brisbane's CityCat and CityFerry network will be back better than ever with a cutting-edge design selected to replace the terminals destroyed during the floods.

Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh today announced the Cox Rayner Architects / Derlot / Aurecon consortium had won the international design competition for the new terminals.

"The terminals will be new iconic pieces of infrastructure for Brisbane,'' Mr Swan said.

"It's not just about replacing what was destroyed, it's about building a better, more liveable city."

The winning design is for a floating pontoon structure tethered to a single up-stream pier, which will be highly resilient in the event of future floods.

Premier Anna Bligh said this innovative and simple approach means that Brisbane commuters will literally be walking on water.

"It also means these new CityCat terminals will have much more than nine lives."

The Commonwealth and State Governments have allocated up to $70 million to replace the five CityCat and two CityFerry terminals destroyed in the floods.

Premier Bligh said the winning design could be easily adapted to suit each terminal location and was ecologically sensitive, utilising recycled materials, solar collectors and water harvesting.

The CityCat terminals are located at UQ, Regatta, North Quay, QUT and Sydney Street and City Ferry terminals are at Holman Street and River Plaza.

Mr Swan and Premier Bligh thanked the other two finalists, Second Nature Collaborative and Shane Thompson Architects & Lat 27 with Bill Short Engineers, and the other entrants in the design competition.

"Throughout each stage of the competition, we have been incredibly impressed with the creativity and technical expertise on display from Queensland's design community," the Premier said.

The winning consortium will be awarded a contract as consulting architect to the terminal rebuilding program and will work with Brisbane City Council throughout the process.

"The rebuild and reconstruction process begins in earnest today and we would expect to see the Council start construction by October," the Premier said.

Under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, the Commonwealth will provide up to $109 million and the State Government will contribute up to $36.25 million to replace the terminals as well as the Riverwalk.
