QuoteProject information sessions

TransLink is holding information sessions to invite members of the public to view the latest plans of the Enoggera Reservoir park 'n' ride and provide further feedback to the project team.

These information sessions will be held at the following times and locations:

    * 7am to 9am on Friday 28 January at the bus stop near The Gap Primary School, on the corner of Waterworks and Illowra Roads, The Gap
    * 9am to 12pm on Saturday 29 January outside The Gap Village Shopping Centre (near Harcourts), The Gap.

Members of the project team will be available to answer questions and gain your feedback.

What the Enoggera Reservoir park 'n' ride will provide

    * parking for approximately 80 vehicles
    * a comfortable passenger waiting area with high-quality shelters, seating and lighting
    * substantial upgrade of Waterworks Road along the front of the park 'n' ride to improve safety for locals, road users and park 'n' ride users
    * better access for walkers and cyclists with pedestrian footpaths and bicycle storage
    * drop off and pick-up areas - we call it a kiss 'n' ride
    * a safe parking area with security cameras and lighting.

This means people can safely park their cars and transfer to a bus to complete their journey. This encourages more people to use public transport for most of their journey.

$47 000/carpark  :is-

I guess you can't really use feeder buses (or could you, if there was a bus station interchange at The Gap Shopping Centre?)
so it may be a necessary evil. On the other hand, how much would it cost to build a bus interchange, which is similar to a car
park except that it has waiting area and more bus stops and a roof? Actually, it pretty much is a bus interchange in the design already.

I wonder how many bicycle spaces there will be, and will it be easy to ride into safely?

It could be too late to stop it.  Apparently it also has a meal break area for drivers, so that's something.

I went to todays session. The guy I tlaked to said the main reason it was being built was 2 fold.

1. Currently many people park on the side of the road in that area and it becomes unsafe. (He didn't say but I think a number of people come from Mt Nebo)
2. Providing the meal break area for drivers. Currently any drivers out that way have to go in to the depot at Toowong to take their break, which increases dead running. I've also noticed the 385 stop along Coopers Camp Rd near Cecil Rd (both inbound and outbound (HERE)) to change drivers, presumably so the original driver can head back to the depot.

Construction is due to start mid-late this year and I did ask and he said the turn around was designed so that in future it can take an articulated bus.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Thats ok, I was however hoping they might have some one from the network side of things as I wanted to ask if there was any plans about upgrading the 362 or changing the route or anything, but he wasn't from that part of TL.

The Gap park 'n' ride ready to go
Wednesday 20 July 2011

Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk today launched the final plans for the new $6 million park 'n' ride at The Gap.

Ms Palaszczuk today joined the Member for Ashgrove Kate Jones, who successfully lobbied for the new park 'n' ride, for an inspection of the site at 1358 Waterworks Road, The Gap.

"This new park 'n' ride will make it easier for more Gap residents to use public transport," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"The overall project has been significantly expanded to deliver a new bus stop with four bus bays, new driver facilities onsite and comfortable sheltered waiting areas with additional seating for commuters.

"We will also undertake upgrade works to Waterworks Road along the park n ride frontage to make the road much safer for local residents, commuters and pedestrians.

"The park 'n' ride will be a safe, accessible point for commuters to access the 384 and high frequency 385 bus routes into the city.

"In total there will be 82 car parks, three disability bays and four motorcycles bays."

Ms Jones said she had worked hard to deliver the new park 'n' ride so Gap residents had a safe place to leave their cars and use public transport.

"People are currently using this location to park and given the layout of the area, it can be quite dangerous," she said.

"I have personally lobbied for these additional spaces to ensure commuters who want to do the right thing and use public transport can do so safely.

"Every full bus takes 58 cars off congested Waterworks Road."

Ms Jones said because of the extensive community consultation the final project design delivers a better overall outcome for the community and minimised impacts on surrounding residents.

"I thank all the local residents for their input into the final design," she said.

"The upgrade along Waterworks Road will deliver much better access for walkers and cyclists.

"There will also be onsite bicycle storage, drop off and pick-up areas, security cameras and lighting."

Ms Jones said the park 'n' ride would also give more travel options for people living in areas such as Mount Glorious, Mount Nebo and Jolly's Lookout.

The park 'n' ride is funded by the Bligh Government, under TransLink's infrastructure upgrade program.

That's right folks. 82 car parks = 0.8 of a triaxle bus load! The capacity of that P + R does not even fill ONE bus!
However, given the location... maybe I can concede...

Every full bus doesn't take any cars off the road. Sorry. It just allows someone to wake up a bit later and fill that slot.

TT, from the consultation session I attended on this project, the area this is proposed for is already an unofficial P&R, but there are some safety concerns with the road set up and where cars are parked, which was park of why this project was done, the other was to provide a bus turn around to allow bigger buses (which it has been confirmed that this bus facility will allow) to turn around at the end of their runs.

You can play semantics about whether every full bus takes cars off the road or not, but the fact is if the bus wasn't there then there would certainly be more cars on the road.

Disagree. I haven't engaged in playing any "game". Public transport does not reduce congestion, which is what that statement implies.

QuoteTo my knowledge, and correct me if I'm wrong, no transit project or service has ever been the clear direct cause of a substantial drop in traffic congestion.  So claiming that a project you favor will reduce congestion is unwise; the data just don't support that claim.

But in that media release they don't say "reduce congestion" they just say "remove 58 cars from the road" which is true seeing as if all those people had cars, and the bus route didn't exist, then they would more than likely drive instead. No, PT doesn't exactly reduce congestion, but it does condense it. In this case, instead of 58 individual cars you have 1 bus.

Look beyond words and at the meaning that they convey. The words are not the message.

58 cars is also a drop in the pacific ocean...

For me the issue is the cost, I could have gotten a cement contractor to build it and The slab and turnaround would have cost about 400k, so why does this cost 6 million? I would personally rather a BMW, at least the congestion would be more comfortable.
