Col, the Tonsley line will survive. The old Mitsubishi plant is earmarked for urban renewal, and plans are out from the SA government to tramtrain the line and extend to flinders uni.

Yes, I was aware of the Flinders uni plan, but with gauge conversion of the Adelaide system on hold (word is the EMUs will be broad gauge) the tramtrain thing is looking increasingly questionable.

The A-city sets are supposed to be gauge-convertible from memory, same as the sleepers being installed everywhere.

Tramtrains to Tonsley will be interesting, considering they have to cross the ARTC line to get there from Goodwood Junction - although obviously double-stacking isn't an issue for container trains leaving via the Adelaide Hills.

I really hope the tramtrain thing does end up happening in Adelaide, as other than Noarlunga (Seaford), Gawler and possibly Outer Harbour their system would be better off as light rail.

By light rail I'm talking about upper end of light rail like the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn or the L.A. Blue Line, both of which run decent length trains with good top speeds.
