$7.3 million boost for 9 major Sunshine Coast bikeway projects

Sunshine Coast cyclists and pedestrians will benefit from more than $7 million in funding across nine projects to provide more bikeways, improved signage, lighting and related infrastructure.

Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the funding is part of a $600 million commitment until 2031 to develop the cycle network in south east Queensland.

"The substantial expansion in cycleways across the Sunshine Coast will make it easier for people to avoid traffic by making it easier to ride to popular locations, such as workplaces, activity centres and schools," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Many of these projects are positioned alongside state controlled roads including providing facilities along David Low Way from Petrie Creek Road to the Maroochy River, Bli Bli and Williams Street to Emu Mountain Road, Coolum Beach.

"This is an important part of the government's long term strategy to reduce our reliance on private vehicles, cut traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions.

"This is a real commitment by the Bligh Government to provide healthy and enjoyable alternatives to the use of private vehicles for transport.

"The projects will contribute to developing a continuous cycle network throughout the Sunshine Coast and link the coast with greater Brisbane.

"As well as providing a healthy alternative for local residents, it also offers yet another option for tourists to get around this wonderful region."

Major Sunshine Coast cycle projects to be delivered in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Regional Council in 2011-12 include:

This is all very good news for the Sunshine Coast.
Full credit to the Minister for these health and environment initiatives.

But perhaps I should suggest a cycle way to Brisbane ...

By 2031, and it will be single lane with crossing bays every few km.

Hey FF, you should take your chances and ride your bike between the rails on the single track.   :hg
