DOCTORS are calling for the State Government to rezone two railway stations to stop patients being stung by unnecessary public transport costs.

Sick people commuting to Box Hill Hospital or the Monash Medical Centre are paying too much to take the train, The Australian Medical Association said.

AMA Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said Box Hill and Clayton are just one station out of the zone boundary overlap.

It forces passengers to pay for a zone 1 and 2 ticket from the city, which is almost four dollars extra on a daily ticket.

"The difference may seem like small change, however to the outpatients, visitors and staff who frequently travel to these hospitals it all adds up," Dr Hemley said.

He wants the Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder to reconsider a zone adjustment for the Box Hill and Clayton railway stations.

He said the problem was only going to get worst when the sites are redeveloped and capacity increases.

This is the major disadvantage of only (effectively) having two zones in the network. To travel that extra station into the next zone, you are paying the same as someone travelling considerably further e.g. the fare from Glenhuntly to Patterson, a distance of 4km, is the same as the fare from Glenhuntly to Stoney Point, a distance of 61km. It is a very unfair system.

Fortunately, in SE Qld we have 23 zones & the difference in cost of travelling into the next zone is only about $1-$2 per day.

+1.

Those that want less zones, well, I really have no idea what makes them want to take such a retrograde step.
