The Government has just spent a great deal of money reinstating the line after the flood, so it is likely to want to recoup that investment by running coal trains over the Range for a few more years to come.  It is unfortunate that the only (quick-fix) solution was to re-build what was there, because we didn't have the luxury of looking at options, carrying out EIS and engineering investigations, resuming land etc -- all elements of any realignment.

Did anyone ask the Minister - maybe it's there, sorry but I've given up reading pollie spin - about the lonngggggg overdue New Toowoomba Rail Crossing, so the nations largest inland city (ex Canberra) can actually be linked to the inter-urban network???   :conf
Come on.  There are far bigger priorities than this one.

The inland line if it is to be competitive with road should not be routed via Toowoomba anyway, an extra 85 km in length over a slower alignment, definately not the means to take freight off the highway system.
