$20 million train contract a boost for Maryborough workers

Queensland Rail has awarded EDI Rail - Bombardier Transportation Pty Ltd a $20 million contract to overhaul ten commuter trains at its facility in Maryborough.

Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the 12 month contract would directly provide work for up to 38 workers at EDI Rail - Bombardier Transportation's Maryborough facility.

"This $20 million contract is a big win for the Maryborough community, as part of the Government's broader $147 million Overhaul Program," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Not only will this project directly deliver up to 38 jobs for Maryborough workers, it will also boost work for local sub-suppliers in the wider Maryborough/ Hervey Bay regions," she said.

"Previously, major fleet overhauls have been carried out by QR National's Rollingstock Services.

"However the extensive Overhaul Program has put QR National's service at full capacity, and it is expected to remain so for some years.

"To fast track this essential Overhaul Program and maintain rollingstock performance, Queensland Rail has awarded the contract for excess overhauls to Downer EDI Rail and Bombardier Transportation. "

Ms Palaszczuk said Queensland Rail had a longstanding relationship with the EDI Rail - Bombardier Transportation joint venture.

"Queensland Rail engaged EDI Rail and Bombardier Transportation in 2009 to overhaul four, three-car trains through a pilot program," she said.

"Three of these trains have been completed and are now in services, with the remaining train nearing completion this month.

"In addition, Queensland Rail is currently under contract with the EDI Rail - Bombardier Transportation joint venture for the supply of 64 new passenger trains, and Downer EDI for the supply of a Sunlander replacement."

The question is which trains are they?

We can easily assume it's the refurbishments (replacement of carpet with new floor and seat covers) and a repaint of the cabs similar to refurbs of SMU223, 239, 249 and IMU102.

Will be more 220s. IMU102 was done at Redbank. So the refurbs will be the same as 223/239/249.
