What is the Sandgate station park 'n' ride upgrade project?

The Sandgate station park 'n' ride upgrade project is a joint Queensland Rail and TransLink initiative to improve station facilities across the network and is part of the Queensland Government's $200 million Station Upgrade Program. The upgraded Sandgate station will provide:

an additional 100 car parking bays on the eastern side of the station, bringing the total number of car parking spaces provided by the station to 336
improved lighting for station platforms, buildings and access paths
    improved drainage system.

The park 'n' ride upgrade is the first stage of a major upgrade to Sandgate station, with a future DDA upgrade to occur, which will include major accessibility improvements.

Why is it needed?

Sandgate station is one of the busiest on the Shorncliffe line and the TransLink network, with almost 2000 people movements through the station each weekday - even more when you include off-peak times and weekends. The improved park 'n' ride capacity will also cater for future growth across the network.

What are the benefits?

The upgraded Sandgate station park 'n' ride will provide customers with additional car parking facilities to accommodate growing demand and enable customers to conveniently and safely connect to a public transport service.

How will this affect me?

Services

Train services will not be affected. Queensland Rail and TransLink will keep customers informed well in advance. During construction, some sections of the existing car park may be closed to public access to provide a safe environment for the construction and customers.

Construction

During construction, there may be some minor changes to pedestrian and vehicular access to the station park 'n' ride off Curlew Street only. Park 'n' ride areas off Towner Street, Knox Street and Rainbow Street will not be affected.

We thank you for your patience and cooperation during these important construction works.

Suprised no Ministerial Statement on this one, might be on the way.

Got to spread the media exposure.

Has Sandgates patronage dropped?

almost 2000 people movements through the station each weekday

2009 Passenger Load survey has 1050 alightings in the PM and 1099 boardings in the AM, so unless they're counting people movements as returns trips then thats saying something.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Like Golliwog, I'm puzzled by this statement:
'Sandgate station is one of the busiest on the Shorncliffe line and the TransLink network, with almost 2000 people movements through the station each weekday - even more when you include off-peak times and weekends'

Okay, let's leave the weekends to one side, but do people traveling off-peak count or not?  Clearly, as the numbers morning and evening don't match, there must be quite a number of people commuting in one direction outside peak. So why don't they get counted (apart from the obvious point that they probably won't find a park by 8:30 anyway)

Golliwog

Because then they would have to employ someone to count passengers all day when they conduct their passenger load surveys.

Still, they should be able to get some data from go card use.

Rail commuters get 100 more car parks at busy Sandgate station

Sandgate Station's park 'n' ride upgrade is promising improvements to one of the busiest stations on the Shorncliffe line.

The $3 million project will make sure 100 car parking spaces are available according to Member for Sandgate Vicky Darling.
``This is great news for our community and I'm looking forward to seeing work start,'' Ms Darling said.
``The retailers have been asking for some time ... parking spaces will be very welcome.
``Later stages will include major accessibility improvements including pathways, a new footbridge, lifts and stairs, a secure bicycle shelter and station enhancements.''
Ms Darling said the project was aimed at freeing street parking and also encouraging the use of the public transport system. The construction of the facility will start later this year and is expected to finish in early 2012.

``The park 'n' ride upgrade is the first stage of a major upgrade to Sandgate train station.''
Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the car park would eventually accommodate 336 vehicles.
