SEQ: High capacity bicycle parking facility must be included in UQ Lakes Bus Station Upgrade

RAIL Back on Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers calls for a high capacity bicycle parking facility to be included in the UQ Lakes bus station upgrade.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"UQ Lakes bus station must be expanded otherwise it risks facing yet more bus-lock and the prospect of being unable to add more buses leading to huge overcrowding. The bus facility is not the only thing that is at capacity; bicycle parking within the area is inadequate given the roaring success of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge in attracting cyclists."

"The current bicycle parking racks, which were only upgraded at the start of 2011 are now full. RAIL Back On Track suggests a 300 bicycle parking facility integrated with bus at UQ Lakes Station is needed. This does not have to be an expensive or sophisticated facility, and it is best that it is not. Simple, decent quality racks (that permit bicycle locking to the frame) inside a large unsecured bicycle cage, good lighting and CCTV and  a water bubbler is probably sufficient. A good bicycle rack that holds 10 bicycles is around $1000 and a large order could well qualify for generous bulk discounts as well."

"The inclusion of a large cycling facility would greatly improve health outcomes, encourage more people to make a habit out of regular exercise from walking and cycle, and to take public transport. Bicycle-bus integration would also be improved. This is something that can be done quickly, cheaply and at modest cost. Costs could also be shared, making the project even more worthwhile."
