Media Release 21 January 2011

SEQ:  Track closure on the Ipswich Rosewood line this weekend (22 - 23 January 2011)

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport users has said due to the planned closure of the Ipswich to Rosewood railway from Corinda to Rosewood this weekend (1), please consider other travel arrangements to avoid compounding difficulties on the roads.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"There is no doubt many volunteers will wish to proceed to the western area of Brisbane which has been seriously impacted by the floods.  Recovery work is proceeding in many Ipswich suburbs.  Please use rail to Corinda and then the rail bus to your destinations. Please keep vehicle traffic on the Ipswich Highway and the roads in the area to a minimum.  There are public transport options (1)."

"It appears that the track closure is necessary so it is essential that recovery efforts are not interfered with by sightseers and vehicles clogging the roads, this will also assist the buses running in lieu of the rail services to maintain a timely service. There are always some delay to normal journey times during track closures, we don't want these delays to be excessive due to unnecessary traffic in the general area.  Please consider your travel options.  Thank you!"

Um, a programmed wait of 15 minutes (less connection time) at Corinda heading outbound?  Why is this considered acceptable?  Delays heading inbound aren't clear but it seems that they are programmed far better.

While part of me thinks that there has been previously a low level of trackwork related disruption on the QR network, and that pax should get used to some disruption for trackwork, they also need to arrange the replacement buses better than this.  CityRail certainly do.  Usually it is no harder to get a CityRail station during a trackwork event than it is in normal times (depending on the station of course).  This is because of the express patterns and high frequency nature of the replacement buses.
