Call to make charity ride state's biggest ever cycling event

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan is urging cyclists to pour into Brisbane in their thousands to make tomorrow's charity bike ride Queensland's biggest ever cycling event.

Seven times Tour-de-France winner Lance Armstrong and Aussie cycling great Robbie McEwen will lead a charity ride in Brisbane to raise funds for the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal.

Ms Nolan said Queensland Rail had relaxed its rules to allow bicycles on the last carriage of trains from 8:15am to allow riders time to get to the RNA starting point by 10.30am.

"Lance Armstrong is the greatest cyclist of all time," Ms Nolan said.

"All cyclists who can manage the 25km ride should register and get to the RNA Showgrounds tomorrow morning.

"This could potentially be the biggest cycling event ever witnessed in the city and a great way for the cycling community to show its solidarity and help raise some vital funds."

The ride will depart from the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane, head out of the city over the Story Bridge down Wynnum Rd and wind through Bulimba back over the Story Bridge, returning to the Showgrounds by 12pm.

"Police will be doing everything they can to manage traffic movements while the ride is on.

"But I urge all motorists to be patient while the ride passes. It's an extra way they support the cause."

Good luck making it "the state's biggest ever cycling event" at 10:30am on a work day. I understand that Lance Armstrong and Robbie McEwen were still riding in Adelaide up until today but I've got to wonder whether they really thought it through. I make no secret of my distain for Lance Armstrong but I've got to hand it to him, he really does put in a lot of work for charity.
