Air conditioning on EMUs

I commute from Morayfield (or Bald Hills if I want a quicker trip) to the Valley twice a week, usually at weekends and offpeak. My old station car doesn't have AC so I usually arrive at the station hot and bothered. My spirits rise when I see that I've got an old school EMU arriving.. is it just my imagination or is the usually freezing air conditioning a feature or a fault? The way it operates if you sit right at the end seats you get a refreshing blast right down your back  :o - excellent when just stepped out of a 36 degree car. When I see one of the older SMUs arriving my heart sinks as there's a fair chance that the aircon is knackered. Also not a good choice of seating in the first carriage where I prefer to travel - mostly cattle class configuration with seating along the sides and strap-hangers, but that's another topic.

The latest trains seem to have the aircon about right.

Yes indeed, the air con on the EMUs is generally very good. If you sit in a window seat seem to get the maximum blast, aisle seat is a bit out of the main air flow.

I'm with Bob on this one. The window seat vents blast straight onto the seats. The newer SMUs and IMUs tend to have a very diffused air flow that you have to stand up to notice it. If you happen to be on an SMU/IMU on a really hot day packed with people, standing next to the vents can be a good idea. Moving around can help too. Less people generally means cooler air, and some carriages are colder on one end (in one case, incredibly cold even in summer).

I find the ends of the carriages the coolest on EMU's. The air shoots straight down, while SMU's and IMU's the air comes from just above the lights so is spread around a bit more instead of blasting on you.

The worst ones are the 220 series SMU, where the intake is in the middle of the carriage. I hate these trains in summer!
