COMPLAINTS about public transport rose by 50 per cent in the past financial year, according to the industry body funded by operators to resolve passenger grievances.

And the introduction of the myki system has resulted in a rise in complaints about ticketing, from 165 reports of problems from travellers in the previous financial year, to 442 in the most recent year.

The Public Transport Ombudsman is an industry body established to resolve complaints from tram, train or bus travellers.

Releasing the group's annual report yesterday, its head, Janine Young, said complaints to the office rose from 1180 in the previous financial year to 1766 in the most recent year.

The report came as new Transport Minister Terry Mulder gave a speech yesterday to the Victorian Council of Social Services.

Mr Mulder was questioned about the construction of many disability-accessible tram stops for low-floor trams - along tram routes where no low-floor trams run.

He said it was a problem that he had inherited.
