If they are going to strike, I would prefer they give everyone free rides instead of not actually running services.

actually as a left over from workchoices they can not just give people free rides. So it limits their choice in industrial actions. I hope they do think this through real hard before striking because generally if people are inconvienced they side with the other side.

Why's that?
basically not all of the workchoices legislation was removed.  City rail used to frequently use the don't charge people for tickets option but they can now have legal action taken against them id they do so.  I was also speaking to a union person when the rail strike (that ended up not going ahead) either last year or the year before was happening and they stated the same reason for not giving a fare free day.

I do understand the legislation actually.  I would have assumed there would always be a threat of legal action.  If you are getting paid, you aren't really entitled to say that I don't want to do part of the job that you signed on for.

It would be quite simple for the drivers not to charge fares but simply only drive the bus BUT if the passengers did not hold a valid ticket to travel in which case the passenger is liable not having paid a fare not the driver for not having collected the fare.
The driver could however be stood down for failing to perform his/her fare collection duties in which case undoubtedly all drivers would then stop work or strike pending the reinstatement of the stood down driver.
The possibility of legal action being taken against a driver or drivers who operated services but did not collect fares would be most unlikely and it would be a very brave or stupid operator or authority that would initiate any such form of action as such an action instituted against a driver would have the immediate effect of bringing all services to a halt statewide, the political ramifactions would be untenable for the Government, the Minister, Translink and the operator or operators involved.

Is is just me, or is there some kind of anti-public transport curse hanging over the Sunshine Coast?

Trains with no toilets
Infrequent services
Proposed timetables that make services longer
50% bus substitution of trains
No duplication of the line
CAMCOS delayed into the never never
Strikes everywhere
