Currently, this is a real grind in a bus.  What can be done?  My plan:

  • Remove right turn from Melbourne St into Grey St for cars, move straight though car path into current right turn line
  • add a lane to busway from Grey St purely for left turning buses into Melbourne St portal
  • close left turn from Hope St into Melbourne St for cars
  • resequence traffic lights to be all co-ordinated
  • if possible continue bus lane between Cordelia and Merivale Sts

Would it help much?  Can anyone think of anything better?

To me the problem is how close the two sets of lights are together. Yes having a seperate lane for the turning buses would be useful, although would that make the turning curve too small for the larger buses? Another alternative would be to close Melbourne street to cars between Grey and at least Hope street, if not Merivale street.

I need to see a diagram. When it is written only I can't really see it.

Good question.  I'm not sure.

Yes, I guess that would be better, although would attract more opposition.

TT, here's the point we are talking about in nearmap: http://www.nearmap.com/?q=@-27.474328,153.017624&ll=-27.474328,153.017624&z=19&t=k&nmd=20100912
Not sure if this helps.

The expensive and possibly not totally necessary other alternative is to continue the tunnel from South Bank under Melbourne St to come up just past the Grey St intersection. To be most beneficial you would have the straight through route come off the underground tunnel on the corner, although to do this and be fully grade seperated, would be very expensive, not to mention disruptive given how many buses pass through there.

One way of possibly alleviating the turning circle issue gthat could arise from having a turning lane for buses could be to widen the portal on the outbound side, although this might not be possible depending on where the supports for the railway are there.

As for images, I could probably make a rough mud map of our ideas in paint, but I have no way of putting it online.

Golliwog, the way to do that is to use an image hosting site, such as Flickr or Picasaweb. Presumably Paint either saves your work as a JPEG or similar, or at least allows you to convert it so such a file format, which you then put up on whichever image host. Like tramtrain, I find it considerably easier to make sense of something like that in graphic form.

Does that help?  It's pretty rough.

Tsk, tsk somebody, didn't anyone tell you that you should label what things are? :P ;)

I'm going to say the orange line would be the new bus turning lane for buses heading outbound from the Cultural Center. The purple line would be the new car lane that would be both straight through and right turns.

If I can get around to it (sorry, I'm kind of busy at the moment) I will try and post a pic of my idea.

Thought it was pretty obvious.

Would also have been nice for the lines to be straight.
