Open fate for underpass

MORAYFIELD, January 15: The busy railway underpass behind the Morayfield Shopping Centre looks set to stay open  despite rumours it will soon close.

A Caboolture Shire Council spokeswoman said Queensland Rail (QR) gave approval for the road as a temporary connection between William Berry Drive and Buchanan Rd (via Visentin Rd) on the basis that it would be closed at some stage.

The spokeswoman said that at the time, QR told the council to plan for an alternative overpass crossing of the railway line.

"It is understood that a line upgrade (the construction of a third track), to be carried out sometime in the future, could be the catalyst for the removal of the underpass," she said.

QR told the Herald that it was a "a local government issue".

Cr Lynette Devereaux (Division 4) said its fate was with QR because it crossed the rail reserve.
She called on QR to keep it open, saying the link was "vitally important" for people wanting to access the Bruce Highway.

Cr Devereaux said without it  traffic would be forced to use the Station Rd level crossing and that would be "absolutely chaotic".

"If and when it closes can you imagine the traffic from Buchanan Rd will have to come by the rail crossing and its convoluted bend?" she said.

A planned overpass at Market Drive would eventually provide another crossing but that was still some time off, she said.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
