Newmarket Station

Riding the ferny grove line the other day I once again went through Newmarket station and once again noticed the large vacant space next to the station. Does anyone know if theres any particular reason for this? Do they have plans to build anything there at some stage? You could probably fit in some medium density residential or office space there. Or it could probably provide some space to stable a few trains. If the station was realigned further north so it was closer to Aburlea St then there would be more space on the southern side to put something in there.

If you mean the vacant space on the left when traveling towards Ferny Grove, that used to be occupied by a small freight yard in days past.  In more recent years there was a short perway siding there, sometimes used to store track machines.  Not sure if its still there.

Yeah, that space. All I can see when the trains go through is that there are the two through tracks, no sidings. Google maps also doesn't show any tracks there other than that either.

These early sidings can be partially seen in this image HERE from about the 1970's. Note: Loco 1250 is coming around the corner from Wilston into Newmarket station on an outbound service to Mitchelton.

when i was on fg line awhile ago, i did notice that they re-graveled the line on that side of the station all the way out to the distance of where a siding would end.... then it mostly grew over with grass.

I havn't noticed that, but I haven't looked too closely. I did however notice that from google/nearmap, the ground is a different colour about there so that would probably explain that.

Newmarket at one stage was the home of the State livestock yards and sales before they were moved to Cannon Hill.
There was a private siding (out of use by 1969)and departmental siding. which according to Brunswick St Bowen Hills and Beyond was removed prior to electrification..
