THE long-awaited Toowoomba bypass could be built within seven years if the Coalition wins the federal election, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott promised yesterday.

Mr Abbott guaranteed $700 million would be put towards the project, with $280 million over the next four years for construction to begin.

The Toowoomba community has been lobbying for the bypass for more than a decade to relieve pressure on the Toowoomba Range crossing, a known accident black spot.

About 4000 trucks use the existing range crossing every day.

The 42km Toowoomba bypass would run from the Warrego Highway at Helidon to the Gore Highway at Athol and, he said, would cost about $1.7 billion in total.
