A MAN has been taken to hospital with head wounds after being hit by a bus at the Grey St and Melbourne St intersection at South Brisbane on Friday night.

An emergency services spokesperson said the man was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital with "cuts to the back and front of his head".

"There was extensive damage to the windscreen,'" the spokesperson said.

An onlooker said the man looked "pretty messed up'" after being hit by the 199 West End Express.

The intersection is one of Brisbane's most notorious, with a dangerous combination of buses running red and amber lights and pedestrians ignoring Don't Walk signals.

In May last year a pedestrian was hit and dragged under a bus and union officials called for a second overpass to be built at the intersection.

At the time, Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman Harold Scruby described the crossing as one of the worst in the city.
