Peak hour relief

QuotePeak hour relief

THE Caboolture rail line will get more peak services starting next month after it was revealed it was the most crowded in Greater Brisbane.

A spokeswoman for Transport Minister Rachel Nolan told the Times yesterday a new morning peak service departing Caboolture at 6.32am and arriving at Central at 7.29am, and a new afternoon peak departing Central station at 3.48pm, arriving at Petrie at 4.30pm, would start in August. The exact day in August was not yet known.

Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said the lobby group was "delighted". "We think it's essential for extra services for the Caboolture line to provide some relief for overloading and congestion," Mr Dow said.

The announcement came after Translink's Tracker report for the quarter to March 2010 showed half of afternoon peak hour trains and one third of morning peak trains on the Caboolture line were overloaded.

The survey counted overloaded trains as those that had passengers standing when the service was more than 20 minutes from Central.

It showed three new morning peak hour trains on the Caboolture line in 2008 cut the proportion of overloaded inbound peak hour trains from half to a third.

Earlier this week, Shadow Minister for Transport Fiona Simpson weighed into the debate, saying the Labor Government's mismanagement of public transport meant commuters were being ripped off.

"It appears clear that it's the government which is choosing which lines get extra services and the level of frequency," Ms Simpson said.

Still no filling of the appalling 30min late evening peak gap.
Evening peak service to Enoggera* 2007 - 7tph
Evening peak service to Enoggera* 2010 - 4tph
* departures from Central between 16:30 and 17:30.

Do you mean between 18:04 and 18:34?  That's just because the peak service ends too soon.

An obvious need to extend the "peak" frequencies to post peak services where there is a demand.

I think it's a joke that peak fare times do not coincide with peak service times.

They'll slug you a peak fare even when there aren't any additional services.

Absolutely, Translink's peak service provision guideline is a rather lame 20mins frequency. Yet they cannot even provide that on many lines during the peak fare period.

We only dream of a 20-minute frequency on the Shorncliffe line!

Meanwhile, many just drive to Northgate to have a better choice of services, compounding traffic and parking issues.
