Media Release 26 May 2010

SEQ:  Consider public transport alternatives please

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport commuters has said that the revelations in the Brisbane media (1,2) that the multi-billion airport link project will do little to relieve congestion further highlights why it is time for a major transport paradigm shift!

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"How much money would it take to return the Airport railway line back to public ownership?  Several hundred millions of dollars compared to 5 or 6 billion dollars for the airport link project.  By returning the airport line back to public ownership, running high frequency services around the clock with a normal TransLink zone fare structure there would be a huge reduction in road congestion to and from the Brisbane Airport and on Kingsford Smith Drive."

"There is an existing rail line to Doomben, extension of that line into Hamilton and the provision of a regular service would also be logical and assist in reducing congestion."

"A major failing of transport policy in south-east Queensland is a failure to maximise the utility of existing public transport infrastructure. It is there paid for by the taxpayer, let us use it for the benefit of the community in a sensible, affordable and sustainable manner!  Why waste billions on road projects with dubious outcomes?"
