go card covers for CityCat fleet

Monday 7 June 2010

Protective covers have been installed over external go card readers on CityCats to ensure readers are even more reliable for customers.

TransLink CEO Peter Strachan said 70 clear plastic covers had been installed on external readers across the CityCat fleet.

"Customers may have noticed these covers while travelling on the CityCats recently in the last month," Mr Strachan said.

"The clear plastic covers have been installed on exposed readers to further protect the readers from moisture and salt exposure from the river.

"These covers are an easy, cost effective way of further protecting and extending the life of go card readers on CityCats.

"This means no change for CityCat customers as you still touch on and off as normal."

Mr Strachan said the covers would continue to ensure even more go card readers were operational for even more customers on CityCats.

"go card users make more than 60,000 trips on CityCats each week, which has almost doubled within a year," he said.

"We expect the protective covers will improve the already high rate (more than 98.7 per cent) of reader availability on CityCats " which meets world-class standards.

"More than 60 per cent of current trips across the network are made on go card " which is already Australia's leading smartcard for public transport."

"even more reliable"?

I presume that partly functioning equipment is deemed available in their 98.7% availability statistic.  Even if the screen, lights and beeps are broken they would say that it is available.
