What is your view about Clem 7 now that it is open?

Absolute mad idea. It should never have been built.

Don't really mind either way
4 (28.6%)
Great idea, it needed to be built
3 (21.4%)
Ok with it if useful for Public Transport (e.g. Route 77, Bus lanes on Capt Cook Bridge)
3 (21.4%)
Should have been built as a busway or rail line.

Thoughts now that Clem 7 is up and running?

I think we need to give it more than a few weeks before deciding on how successful/unsuccessful it is.

Generally a good thing. Of course its still very early to see the long term benefits of it.

longboi

Its a good thing although we can't judge its full effectiveness until Airport Link is completed.

Won't the Airport Link make Airport Drive even busier?

Well yes but that's kind of the point. The gateway upgrade project is being done to cater for it.

Does the bell toll for the Clem7?

QuoteDoes the bell toll for the Clem7?

Brisbane motorists have not taken kindly to the introduction of the Clem7's toll, with traffic volumes down a staggering two-thirds since the toll was introduced ...

Seems things aren't looking to good. However things might even out again once people forget that it used to be free, even if for a short time.

In the end, with the way traffic is developing, people may have to use it.

I wonder how route 77 is faring?
Does anyone know?

Here is some interesting analysis:

http://blog.intelligentinvestor.com.au/bristlemouth/traffic-trouble-for-rivercity/

The Clem7 is faring even worse than the M7 and CrossCity Tunnel in Sydney, which suffered 50% drops in traffic once the toll kicked in.

Given that they now have only 25% of the traffic they need to meet their interest payments, we should expect to see this tunnel in receivership soon, just like the CrossCity and Lane Cove tunnels in Sydney.

Cheers, Paul

QuoteClem 7 Busway here we come!!!!!!!

Wooo!!!

Take one of the tunnels for rail- or both. ICRCS tunnels half done already!!!
They could bore into the side of the tunnels and re-route them perhaps?

The Bowen Hills exit can be connected to Mayne Rail Yards...

how about a viaduct from SE busway to southern entrance then a link to the inner northern busway

Clem7 tunnel slammed as traffic snarls

Clem7 tunnel slammed as traffic snarls

TWO car accidents on the Story Bridge caused traffic chaos on Wednesday morning as Queensland's peak motoring body labelled the Clem7 tunnel a congestion-busting failure.

The two crashes at 8am and 8.30am temporarily blocked lanes in both directions bringing traffic to a standstill, yet most commuters chose to wait in the gridlock rather than pay the Clem7 toll.

The RACQ said the new $3 billion cross-river tunnel was causing major congestion problems in Brisbane's inner-north, with the already choked Lutwyche and Newmarket roads unable to cope with the influx of new traffic and changes to traffic signals.

"Back in 2005 when we made our submission to the environmental impact study we warned then that there was the potential for this sort of congestion when you funnel a whole new arterial road on an already-congested arterial," spokesman Gary Fites said.

He said while southern approaches to the tunnel were not causing major hassles for drivers, it would be a long, congested wait for motorists in the city's inner-north until Airport Link was completed.

"We will wait and see what impact the imposition of the full toll has on this bottleneck we are getting at the northern exit and access to the tunnel," Mr Fites said.

"But nevertheless the sort of feedback we are getting from our members . . . is that it is going to be a very long two years and a lot of waiting in traffic for motorists (in that area) if nothing is done to relieve that congestion."

Council data released to The Courier-Mail showed that traffic on part of Lutwyche Rd, north of Newmarket St, had increased by more than 6800 vehicles in the first day after the tunnel opened.

Airport Link is expected to ease congestion by 40,000 cars a day on Lutwyche Rd when the $4.8 billion project opens in mid-2012. Airport Link project officers predict by 2026 nearly 50,000 fewer cars would use Lutwyche Rd than would do so without the new link.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said he was investigating ways to alleviate the immediate congestion.

"This is a difficult spot at the moment and council is looking to see what we can do to help motorists, but I make the point that this is just a little taste of how bad traffic congestion would be every day unless we get on and build things like the Clem7," he said.

"We never said the Clem7 would solve everything.

"Our plan to ease traffic congestion relies on a suite of bridge and tunnel projects, including the Airport Link which will take traffic away from this area, and also the Go Between Bridge at Lang Park which will open this year."

I hereby declare (in my best impersonation of the Queen) the end of road based transport systems. 40 year reign but it has come to an end!!!!!

It is kind of 'harmonic' that the RACQ is in with the knife ...   :bo

I find Campbell's comments ironic because we have Clem 7 open and we have the congestion, and still nobody is using the tunnel.
I think all the investors are backing away now from tunnels, tolls etc. BrisCon was a farce and Clem 7... its not looking good...

Wow! Is there some public transport photograph competition of the year award! This is amazing!
On the other hand, it says a lot about motorists!
If motorists were charged $2.90 each way per day, I'm sure public transport use would experience a few hundred percent increases...
